6. Grand Ayatollah Sayyed Ayatollah As-Sayyid Ruhollah Mostafavi Musavi Khomeini

7. Grand Ayatollah Sayyed meaning “Grand Great Sign of God Minister” but referred to as Khomeini or in Iran officially known as Imam Khomeini. He is most famous for his political role but was also a great religious figure in Iran. Khomeini was the leader of the revolution and strongly anti-American.

13. Tehran The city of Tehran in 1979 around late January – early February held a great demonstration consisting of several million Iranians, Black Friday, however this is not the only historical event to go down in Tehran to do with the Iranian Revolution.

15. 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days from November 4, 1979 to January 20, 1981, after a group of Islamist students and militants took over the American Embassy in support of the Iranian Revolution. After the Islamic failed to negotiate the release of the captured Americans, the US commenced a rescue (Operation Eagle Claw) attempt, consisting of the destruction of two aircraft and the deaths of eight American servicemen and one Iranian civilian as the mission was a failure.
