STMicroelectronics is one of the
leading semiconductor companies
in the world. The company’s
revenues in 2010 were 10,350
M$ and it employs around 53,000
people in 14 major production
sites. The revenues are split into
three major operating segments:
Automotive, Consumer, Computer
& Communications Infrastructure
(40%); Industrial /Multi Segments
(40%) and Wireless (20%).
During 2010, 23% of the company
revenues were invested in R&D
to maintain the innovation in its
technology and product roadmaps.
ST has a major presence in all
market segments (Automotive,
Computer, Consumer, Industrial
and Wireless) and it also has a
particular focus on four important
application areas that play a key
role in enriching daily life, helping
society work better and protecting
the planet. These are: Energy
Saving, Smart Consumer Devices,
Health and Wellness, and Trust and
Security.
In his presentations at ST’s
conferences, Dauber focused on
two of these key sectors that are
expected to be major drivers for
growth in the years to come and of
special interest for the country:
Energy Management and
Healthcare. Together, these
sectors represent more than 25%
of the economies in the western
hemisphere.
At the technology session in
Tel Aviv, Dauber presented ST’s
solutions in the areas of Energy
Management, (Photovoltaics, Smart
Grids,Metering HEV (Hybrid
Electric Vehicles), Motor Controls),
Automation and Process Controls
and Home Automation. The need
to address the planet’s appetite for
energy coupled with the need to
reduce global warming is forcing
industriestoadoptnewtechnologies,
both to better facilitate the use of
alternative renewable sources of
energy and also to significantly
reduce energy consumption.
ST’s leadership in power,
processing and communication
semiconductor solutions make
it as a front runner in the energy
management sector in three
key domains: Home/Factory
automation, Smart Grid andHybrid
Electric Vehicles (HEV).
Home/factory automation is
targeting the reduction of energy
consumption mainly by using new
ways to drive motors (electronically
commutated three phase), which can
reduce energy consumption by up to
50%. Motor drive represents around
60% of energy used in homes and
industries today.
SmartGridsareanevolutionofthe
traditional grid, adding intelligence
to better manage the generation
,transmission, conversion and usage
of electricity, with utilities and
consumers connected and operating
in a smart mode to optimize :
• Efficient management of energy
sources
technologies available today in
ST allow the development of a
new generation of products that
combine advanced analog front
end, ultra-low-power processing
and communication features. Those
products, part of the MEMS and
sensor family, position ST as a key
player in the development of new
applications for the diagnostics
and treatments in ambulatory and
personal care.
ST intends to play a leading
role in these two sectors, as well
as in the smart consumer and trust
and security fields.. The overall
economic and geographic changes
coupled with the
easier access to technology
and manufacturing offer Israeli
companiesnewopportunitiesrelated
to development, manufacturing
and marketing. While some Israeli
companies develop very good
applications knowledge they still
lack access to leading silicon and
packaging technologies and here
ST can play a crucial role. In fact,
ST is ready to consider a variety of
business models and partnerships
and work with customers to ensure
a successful outcome.

In the Haifa session of the event
the focus was on MEMS (Micro-
Electro-Mechanical Systems) and
sensor products in Health and
Wellness applications. During this
session a special attention was
given to the potential of existing
and new MEMS technologies for
breakthrough applications in the
healthcare field.
ST addresses three main areas in
the healthcare field, related to the
medical infrastructures and services
provided: intensive care (hospitals),
ambulatory care and personal
care. All three blocks are part of a
medical and healthcare ecosystem
centered around the patients and
deployed to provide differentiated
patient services.
The medical/healthcare market
especially in diagnostic and/
or treatment for ambulatory and
personal care offers many potential
volume applications based on
MEMS and sensor technologies and
related products.
