The Search & Sources
As always, adjustments can be made to any segment to better fit the
classroom time you have for the lesson.

Class Period Time Required:
One 90 minute block
Step by Step:
1. Librarian will demonstrate use of nonfiction books as information source (index, etc)
a. Activity (10 minutes): Students will each receive a book with a search task on a post
it- students will use the book to answer the question posed
2. Librarian will present on online sources (databases, general internet) with accompanying
Powerpoint presentation
3. Librarian will present on searching tricks including search term selection, keyword vs. natural
language vs. boolean, google tricks, truncation, wild cards, nesting, and phrase searching
a. Activity (10 minutes): Guided search term brainstorming: as a class, students will
compile a list of search terms for a particular topic and separate them in to broad,
narrow, and synonym categories
b. Activity (15 minutes): Students will try out boolean searching, google tricks,
truncation, wild cards, nesting, and phrase searching using search engines and
databases using accompanying practice worksheet
