IBM has become the latest company to announce a series of new
services and software aimed at helping companies make better use
of cloud computing.
It has unveiled a number of developments aimed at aiding firms who
want to simplify and accelerate the use of the cloud and big data,
with storage systems aimed at improving management of this,
quicken and simplify the adaptation of firms to hybrid cloud systems
and produce "optimised" performance for mid-market enterprises.

2. Senior vice president for the company's Systems & Technology Group
and integrated supply chain Tom Rosamilia said IBM is "uniquely
positioned to compete aggressively for public, private and hybrid cloud
computing opportunities.
"The new IBM Systems and solutions provide superior efficiency and
agility to help clients quickly deploy the right cloud infrastructure that
best meet their needs."

3. Among the new products launched by the company recently is its
PureApplication System, which is aimed at smaller configurations of 32
or 64 cores. IBM has said it is adding "new capabilities" to this and a
number of other systems.
One of these is the Power System Solution Edition for Service
Providers, which is a pre-built cloud solution that comes with
OpenStack support for SmartCloud Entry and PowerVC, designed for
quick installation.

4. Such new devices may reflect the increasing use of the cloud by
companies, who find it useful as a means of data storage and of
providing greater security and accessibility. The latest innovations are
arising in response to the varied needs of different firms, whose usage
of the cloud might differ from others based on their own size, the nature
of the business, the proportion of remote working that may be
undertaken and the volume of data generated.
The announcements of new products and services by IBM follow a
similar statement by Microsoft earlier this week.
