By Aaron Price Job roles in the Media
Camera Operative Roles within the Camera Crew are clearly delineated, involving clear progression paths over many years to eventually become Directors of Photography. Camera crew members must have good colour vision, a combination of creative and technical skills, agility, speed, precise attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate and to work as part of a team. The cameraman may seem like a simple less important job however, has becomes one of the most competitive jobs in the mean with camera operatives struggling to find jobs. Some work freelance while others are contracted with companies. A director need to be able to trust the camera worker and therefore they sometime prefers certain people for the job.
Camera Operative As one of the more demanding jobs the camera operative must be able to work long hours on the same job day in, day out. The camera operative has become one of the most important job in TV and Film because they have to work from the directors vision whilst also using their own initiative to do so. Furthermore if the camera worker slips up just a little through a scene, they could of ruined the scene captured and therefore would have to begin again wasting time and money. A camera operative has a gross salary of £21,000 a year or more depending on the projects they are working on.
Lighting Department All Lighting occupations require the following knowledge and skills: Health and Safety knowledge and awareness; ability to work comfortably at heights; good communication and presentation skills; knowledge of different types of lighting equipment, accessories and effects; literacy, numeracy and I.T. skills; patience and attention to detail; stamina and physical agility; willingness to work long and irregular hours, and to travel; full driving license According to skill set these are all the requirements you will needs for a job in the lighting department.
Lighting Department This is traditionally a male-dominated section of the industry, although some women now work in these roles.  Members of the Lighting department work in studios or on locations, both indoors and outdoors.  They must be qualified electricians and generally acquire their skills with a combination of on-the-job experience and college training.  It is usual to start work in a lighting hire company to gain a thorough knowledge of all types of equipment, but some individuals start their careers working in theatre.  Many of those working in the Lighting department become freelancers once they have established themselves in the industry. The workers in the lighting department will have different jobs to do, these biggest will probably be capturing the directors vision on the set. The hardest part of this is using artificial light to simulate natural light especially in studios and on different locations around the world. Also it will be difficult as they have to work around the scenery especially if there are on location. The average wage of a employee in the lighting department is £31,000
Director The director is debatably the most important job role in TV and especially feature films. Their job is to create a vision for the whole production. They are there to ensure a smooth running and ensure every crew member is doing their job right. The most important job a director has is to initialise a vision for the script. They must organise the script into a series of shots from which the technical support will help out with when producing.
Director Out of the entire film crew it is the director who has to make sure the film is a success and it is their name who will be mentioned once the film is out. This is how directors make a name for them selves and become the best in the world such as; Stephen Spielberg – ‘Saving Private Ryan’, ‘Jurassic Park’ and ‘catch me if you can’ also James Cameron directing the blockbuster ‘Avatar’. Stephen has made such a huge name for him self in the Film industry with 26 films directed, and all of them a success with his latest film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull making a gorss income off $786,6363,033 Depending on how much money the producer invests into the production, they can earn from $30 - $41 per hour, which is around triple the amount of a typical job in the UK and USA.
Other job roles in the media The film industry divides into 5 sectors: Development- The writing, packaging and financing of film ideas a scripts. Production- The process of setting up and shooting every scene in the film Post-production-Where all these shots are assembled, treated and mixed into the finished product. Distribution- The process of selling this product to audiences via the cinemas, retailers and movie rentals. Exhibition- The cinemas which screen the film for the general public
Other job roles in the media There are many choices when taking a job within film. From the runners to the make-up artists. A job may be found in may aspects of its production. Taking this into account we can see why the film industry have become a major interest to the youth of today.
