On November 16th, the author and their group volunteered with Second Harvest Food Bank to glean citrus at a local farm in Plaquemines Parish. The Buford Family had generously donated leftover fresh fruit to help families in need. With the help of volunteers, over 25,000 pounds of fresh fruit was collected to provide to those who may not otherwise have access to fresh produce. Fighting hunger requires a community effort, and volunteer gleaning is important for the food bank's mission of distributing food to those in need across south Louisiana.

2. On Saturday, November 16th, we volunteered to help Second Harvest
Food Bank pick fruit at a local citrus farm in Plaquemines Parish. This
is the second year our group has volunteered at the gleaning.
The Buford Family contacted Second Harvest and generously donated
the leftover fresh fruit available to help families in need.
However, without the help of volunteers this task would not be
possible.
Second Harvest Food Bank depends on thousands of volunteers every
day to carry out its mission of “leading the fight against hunger” by
sorting/packing donated food and preparing hot meals for Kids Cafe
program by the community.
Fighting hunger in the community is a large task for one organization
or person to do - the key is to work together as a community or a
team.

3. We signed in, got instructions on
what to do and got started working.
First, we built some boxes for the
fruit we were about to collect.

6. Our team of six worked 5 hours and helped pick
over 25,000 pounds of fresh fruit for families who
might not be able to provide fresh produce to their
families or have enough food to feed their family.
