2. UNVEILED (for Hearts of Hope)
When I'm home, my friends
and I volunteer often. Now
that we are away at
college, we still want to
find a way to help, even if
we can't physically be
there. So we came up with
a unique idea to help them
using our own individual
talents and decided to help
through a public
awareness campaign, that
can be spread through
social media, PSA's and
any other media outlets.
3. Who did you serve?
And what did you accomplish that day?
I’ve grown up volunteering for Hearts of Hope, a nonprofit
organization in Lafayette, LA that responds daily to those
affected by sexual violence through education, advocacy and
empowerment. As a volunteer I have painted walls, participated
in fundraisers, gathered groups of friends together who all
volunteered their talent to put together a six song CD, featuring a
song titled Heart of Hope (found on iTunes and on the
organization’s website), and organized a CD release party with
all proceeds benefiting the agency.
The current project we are working on consisted of 30 college
students who volunteered their time and talent by participating in
a video series of awareness and prevention of sexual abuse, as
well as general self worth and empowerment. The video series is
called ‘UNVEILED’, where we will be revealing truths about
sexual violence and general self worth.
4. On the day of the shoot, we discussed the importance of the charity and its
mission and chose a way to use our individual talents to help them in a
unique way, hoping to educate as many people as possible. We want to
spread awareness in hopes of having this video series project go viral.
The planning of this project started a month ago when the idea just hit me! I
immediately wrote the concept of each video and contacted our
videographer, Kailey Dickerson. She fell in love with the idea as well, and
within two weeks, with no hesitation, the group of volunteers flooded in. All
actors and a few true survivors of this type of abuse, just so happened to be
available on the same day, which was a miracle in and of itself. The energy
in the room was overwhelmingly positive!! The video shoot took about five
hours to complete and is now in the editing phase, which should be
completed by December!! I’m SO excited!!
5. What is your team’s plan for an ongoing relationship with the
charity?
Our team’s plan is to
ALWAYS stay involved with
this agency and cause. We
hope to expand this video
series into other areas that
can help educate and
spread awareness about all
areas of sexual abuse of
adults and children.
6. What would your charity
do if they won part of the prize money?
Hearts of Hope would use the funds to
enhance the direct services it provides
and implement this public awareness
campaign locally, statewide and
nationally. We want everyone to know
where to find the help they need to
overcome this tragedy. This cause has
always had difficulty raising funds due
to the nature of the topic. No one wants
to hear about it, no one wants to believe
it happens. The reality is…it happens.
We want them to be put in the spotlight,
no longer overlooked.
