I have written plenty of articles and blog posts about how a business person can benefit enormously from writing and self publishing a book. Not only does a book showcase your expertise, you also naturally become a trusted advisor in the eyes of your prospects and clients.
However, even though most people nod their head and agree in theory that self publishing a book would be helpful for their business, only 3% of people actually take action and DO something about it!

I have written many articles and blog posts about how a business
person can benefit enormously from writing a book. Not only does
a book showcase your expertise, you also naturally become a
trusted advisor in the eyes of your prospects and clients.
However, even though most people nod their head and agree in
theory that becoming a published author would be helpful for their
business, only 3% of people actually take action and DO
something about it!
3. Here's Why You Need to Start
Writing TODAY
I will give you tips on HOW anyone can easily write a book a little
later, but first let’s start with what happens after your book is
finished.
We are going to use two examples: a real estate agent and a
chiropractor.
4. The real estate agent – let’s call him Bob – takes copies of his book
everywhere. He takes copies to his BNI breakfast meetings and
places them on the table alongside his cell phone and coffee.
Inevitably he ends up giving copies away to people, who now
become prospects.
At his Open Houses, he neatly displays 20 books on the kitchen
counter beside his little pile of business cards. Guess what gets
more attention? Yes, the books. Each person who is not currently
working with an agent gets a copy of his book, and Bob gets their
contact information. (By the way, Bob buys wholesale copies of his
book for about $4.)
5. At his listing appointments, Bob gives them a copy of his book,
signed and dedicated to the client. They’re impressed.
On his website and in his advertising, he displays a photo of the
front cover of his book. He is already paying for that advertising, so
it’s doesn’t actually cost anything more to advertise that he is a
Published Author.
How many new clients does Bob get each
month as a result of being a Published
Author? Let’s leave that for a moment.
6. Our Chiropractor
Our chiropractor wrote a book for his potential clients as well. Each
new patient that comes to the clinic gets a copy of the book. Here’s
what happens: when the patient goes home and her husband asks
“What’s this all about anyway?” she can intelligently answer his
questions by showing him the book that clearly explains what
chiropractor care is all about and why it’s good for you.
The chances of her becoming a repeat client are now increased
significantly. In fact, she tells her elderly mother about her new
discovery and her mom decides to go in for a consultation about her
hip pain. In the book she reads about chiropractic care can be
helpful for children with chronic ear infections so she starts bringing
her child to the clinic as well.
The chiropractor also has a promotion in the clinic telling current
patients that if they refer a new patient to come in for a free
consultation, they get a free copy of the book. (People will do
anything to get something for free.)
You get the point, right?
7. What's Your Average Customer Value?
I’d like you to think for a moment about Average Customer Value.
Every business owner needs to know this number, but sadly, most
don’t. How much is one new customer worth to you? If you don’t
know this number, then how do you know how much money you
can spend to acquire a new customer? You need to know this
number. The simplest way to figure this out is to add up the amount
of money you’ve made on 10 average customers and then divide
that total by 10. That’s your average customer value.
For the real estate agent, that number could be $5000.
For the Chiropractor, the lifetime value of a new patient could be
$2000.
There are a lot of variables that can change these numbers, such
as location, but let’s use these figures for the sake of illustration
purposes.
8. What If??
So what if the real estate agent that writes a book manages to get 3
new clients a month as a result of giving it away to people he
meets? Of course there are no guarantees, but What If? That’s a
potential increase of $180,000 a year. If the Chiropractor gets 10
new patients a month as a result of his book, that a potential
increase of $240,000!
Even if we were to stay very conservative and estimate each of
them getting only 1 new client a month, that’s still $60,000 extra for
the real estate agent and $24,000 for the chiropractor. It’s nothing
to sneeze at.
What do you think? Is it worth it?
9. Start Right Now
And that brings me back to why you need to start writing your book
RIGHT NOW. If I wrote 7 books in 2012, you can surely write one
book – based on what you already say to your clients – in a month
or two. Time passes anyway no matter what we do. Six months
from now you could be a published author, holding your paperback
book in your hands… or not. Six months from now is going to
happen anyway!
Now that you know the value of your average customer, let me ask
you this: What is the COST of putting off your book? How much is
not having a book costing you on a monthly or annual basis?
10. You CAN Do It!
Writing a book is really not difficult. Especially if you are writing a
business book based on what you already know. You already have
it all inside of you! What do you find yourself saying to each and
every new customer? Write that down and out it in your book. You
CAN write a book. I know that you can.
11. How Can I Help YOU?
In my Expert Author Program I hold you by the hand and
show you step-by-step how to write your book. I even

make it available on Amazon.

12. Last Thoughts
If you want to grow your business this year, writing a book is the #1
way to do it. No matter which route you take, remember to write
your outline first and stay on your path. You may get frustrated and
start to doubt yourself, but don’t give up! It’s worth it.
