Washington, D.C.
Washington D.C. – the capital of the USA. The city
 was founded in 1791 by the first president of the
         USA and was named after him.
George Washington, the
 first President of the
 USA, after whom the
    city was named.
The city stands on the Potomac
             River.
The city is situated in the District of Colambia.
This District doesn’t belong to any of the states.
The District was named
   in honour of the
discovered of America
 Christofor Colambus.
Washington D.C. is unusual city. It has some
peculiarities. Such us:
1. The city was designed and build as a capital.
2. It was designed in
french style by french
   architector Pierre
   Charles L’Enfant.
3. There are no sky-scrapers due to the law
against building houses higher than the Capitol.
4. It is the city
  of only one
   industry –
 law-making.
5. It is the city of greenary.
The Capitol - place, where the US Congress
meets to discuss the nation's affairs. It stands on
  Capitol Hill, the highest point in the city.
The Library of Congress is not far from the Capitol. It is
       one of the largest libraries in the world.
It takes about 500 kilometres of
  shelves to hold all the books!
Pennsylvania Avenue joins the Capitol and the White
House which is the President's residence. The White House
has been the home of every president with the exception of
                  George Washington.
The North side of the White house.
The Washington Monument is situated in Potomac
Park. It is the tallest stone structure in the USA.
It is about 160 metres tall and is called the “Pencil” because of its
                               shape.
The Lincoln Memorial is built in the style of a classic
                Greek Temple.
Inside the
Memorial there is
   a large white
 marble statue of
the 16th President
    of the USA
This is Jefferson Memorial built in honour of Thomas
Jefferson, the third president of the USA and the author of the
                  Declaration of Independence.
Inside you can see a
   statue of Thomas
  Jefferson. There are
extracts from his most
 famous works on the
       walls.
Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul
Arlington National Cemetery - the military cemetery.
In the cemetery are buried members of wars, presidents
     , heads of the Supreme Court and astronauts .
         Now the cemetery has 300,000 graves .
