The TDW Model 420A Plug Setting Machine is a special pressure balance system to a TDW tapping machine offering easier and safer plug setting and retrieval.

1. What is the Model 420A plug setting machine?
It is a special device designed for setting and retrieving 4-inch
through 20-inch LOCK-O-RING® Plus completion plugs
within STOPPLE® Plus fittings. These fittings feature
LOCK-O-RING® Plus flanges with a groove into which the
leaves of a completion plug can be extended. The machine’s
maximum working pressure is 1480 psi (102 bar) at 100°F
(38°C). it has an operating temperature range of -20°F (-29°C)
to 180°F (82°C), and it maximum continuous rating is 180°F
(82°C) at 1380 psi (95 bar).

Why would I need a plug setter?
Any type of maintenance or repair work on a high pressure
line can be potentially dangerous, and due to the extremely
great forces at work, setting a completion plug on a line under
high pressure requires the utmost skill and care. For example, a
completion plug set on a 20-inch line operating at 1480 psi
(102 bar) restrains more than 400,000 pounds of force. The
Model 420A plug setting machine is specifically designed to
make plug setting and retrieval easier and safer than ever before.
How does it make plug setting easier?
The machine features a special pressure balance system. This
system transfers pressure from the pipeline to the inside of
the plug setter, counteracting line pressure pushing against the
machine and reducing the amount of effort needed to extend the
machine’s control bar and set a plug.
How can I be sure I’m installing the plug correctly?
The machine has a non-rotating control bar. Because it does
not rotate, the plug holder base can be keyed to the control bar,
ensuring the plug will be installed in the correct orientation.
Also, the machine’s drive lock prevents extension or retraction
of the leaves of the completion plug unless the plug is properly
shouldered against the ledge in the fitting flange.
Is the machine easy to operate?
Yes. The plug setter’s drive lever actuates 90 degrees to fully
extend or retract the plug leaves, eliminating any guesswork
during setting or retraction. Plus, the machine features two turns
per inch lead screw. More lead means fewer turns are needed
to lower or raise the control bar. And, the measuring rod has a
unique hexagon cross-section, so it can be turned with a wrench,
though hand turning is still an option. l
