9. IDEAS WORTH
SPREADING
TED TED is a nonprofit organization devoted
to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a
four-day conference in California 26 years
ago, TED has grown to support those world-
changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At
TED, the world’s leading thinkers and doers
are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18
minutes. Talks are then made available, free,
at TED.com. TED speakers have included
Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert,
Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot,
Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel
Allende and former UK Prime Minister
Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are
held each year: The TED Conference takes
place every spring in Long Beach, California
(along with a parallel conference, TEDActive,
in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held
each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.
TED’s media initiatives include TED.com,
where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the
new TED Conversations, enabling broad
conversations among TED fans; and the
Open Translation Project, which provides
subtitles and interactive transcripts as
10. well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be
translated by volunteers worldwide.
TED has established the annual TED Prize,
where exceptional individuals with a wish to
change the world are given the opportunity
to put their wishes into action; TEDx,
which offers individuals or groups a way to
host local, self-organized events around
the world; and the TED Fellows program,
helping world-changing innovators from
around the globe to become part of the
TED community and, with its help, amplify
the impact of their remarkable projects and
activities.
TEDx In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx
is a program of local, self-organized events
that bring people together to share a TED-
like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks
video and live speakers combine to spark
deep discussion and connection in a small
group. These local, self-organized events
are branded TEDx, where x = independently
organized TED event. The TED Conference
provides general guidance for the TEDx
program, but individual TEDx events are
self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and
regulations.)

14. A program of ten downtown Cleveland wall murals was sponsored
by the Cleveland Area Arts Council, The New Organization for the
Visual Arts, and The Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects in the mid-1970s.
Mort Eptein, a TEDxCLE 2012 speaker, was chosen as one of the
ten mural designers. Epstein’s design was originally planned for a
large Cleveland State University building and featured two stylized
wall outlets, one brown, one white, celebrating the racial diversity
of the University as an integrated outlet (note that the screws were
equal signs). A change in site provided a vertical wall near the
University.
12
15.
16. Many people will recall Mort Epstein’s iconic mural from the
1970s. Bold panels of color speaking loud and clearly through the
crowded rush of downtown, calling for racial equality with bold
and striking simplicity.
Inspiring the icon for TEDxCLE 2012 The Maker Class, the plugs
once again call to the community to engage, be energized, and to
“plug in” to the creative forces that continue to initiate change in
our city and encourage us to make. The six-outlet unit now nine,
as the white plugs form an X – referencing the intersection of ideas
and innovation, as well as a nod to the “x” of TEDx, itself.

Cleveland Classical Revolution
You Say You Want A Revolution?
#classicalrevolution
Classical Revolution Cleveland started its chapter in 2009. The
mission of Classical Revolution Cleveland is to present chamber music
performances in highly accessible venues, such as bars and cafes, and
collaborating with local musicians and artists from various styles and
backgrounds. The musicians who play in Classical Revolution come
from a variety of backgrounds. Most are recent graduates or current
students from the nation’s best conservatories. Classical Revolution
pushes others who are accomplished non-professional musicians to
use Classical Revolution as an outlet to maintain their musical life while
working non-musical jobs. This inter-relation between professional and
non-professional musicians is a fundamental part of their organization:
dissolving boundaries that result from the specialization of musicians
and bringing people, both audience and performers, together. By taking
chamber music out of the recital hall and making it more accessible to
an audience who does not otherwise hear such music in a live context,
they hope to bring to a broader public consciousness the realization
that this music is still relevant and needn’t be restricted to more austere
venues.

Seeing So Much More
#davidrabinsky
A 13 year resident of the Warehouse District in Cleveland, Ohio, David
Rabinsky was born and raised in the east side of the city. After studying
abroad and receiving a hospitality degree from the Tadmor School of
Hospitality Management in Herzliya, Israel, he returned to Cleveland
and opened David’s Gourmet, Inc., an off premise catering company in
Cleveland Heights operating from 1983 through 1999. After selling his
business, David immediately joined The Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland and
is currently the director of social catering. His responsibilities include
selling all social events, primarily wedding celebrations at the hotel
and The Silver Grille in the Higbee building. In his late 30s, David was
diagnosed with the familial genetic condition, Retinitis Pigmentosa
and then noticed the slow loss of peripheral and ultimately most of his
central vision. At present, some 15 years with the condition, David can
see light and dark and occasionally can notice some shapes. David
and 4 year-old guide dog, Kody, greet perspective clients in the Motor
Lobby of the hotel and escort them to appropriate venues throughout
the hotel. Between appointments, David drafts custom proposals on
his office computer which is adapted with voice technology, allowing
him to keep up with the technology-driven modern brides. David and
Kody can be seen traversing the streets of downtown.

Billy Collins
Everyday Moments, Caught In Time
#billycollins
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading and in honor of TED, we share
one of our favorite TEDTalks.
Accessibility is not a word often associated with great poetry. Yet
Billy Collins has managed to create a legacy from what he calls
being poetically “hospitable.” Preferring lyrical simplicity to abstruse
intellectualism, Collins combines humility and depth of perception,
undercutting light and digestible topics with dark and at times biting
humor.
While Collins approaches his work with a healthy sense of self-
deprecation, calling his poems “domestic” and “middle class,” John
Taylor has said of Collins: “Rarely has anyone written poems that appear
so transparent on the surface yet become so ambiguous, thought-
provoking, or simply wise once the reader has peered into the depths.”
In 2001 he was named U.S. Poet Laureate, a title he kept until 2003.
Collins lives in Somers, New York, and is an English professor at City
University of New York, where he has taught for more than 40 years.

Cloud Nothings
Musical Performance
#cloudnothings
In 2009, Cleveland’s Dylan Baldi began writing and recording lo-fi
power-pop songs in his parents’ basement, dubbing the project Cloud
Nothings. His music quickly started making the Internet rounds, and
fans and critics alike took note of his pithy songcraft, infectiously
catchy melodies, and youthful enthusiasm. Baldi soon released a string
of 7”s, a split cassette, and an EP before putting out Turning On – a
compilation spanning about a year’s worth of work – on Carpark in
2010. January 2011 saw the release Cloud Nothings’ self-titled debut
LP, which, put next to Turning On, found Baldi cleaning up his lo-fi
aesthetic, pairing his tales of affinitive confusion with a more pristine
aural clarity. In the interval since the release of Cloud Nothings, Baldi
has toured widely and put a great deal of focus on his live show, a
detail that heavily shapes the music of his follow-up album, Attack on
Memory. For all of early Cloud Nothings’ fun and fervor, Baldi admits
that it never sounded like most of the music he listens to. With Attack
on Memory, he wanted to remedy this anomaly, and in setting out to do
so, Baldi and co. have created an album that shows vast growth in a
still very young band.

The World Peace Game
#johnhunter
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading and in honor of TED, we share
one of our favorite TEDTalks.
Musician, teacher, filmmaker and game designer, John Hunter has
dedicated his life to helping children realize their full potential. His own
life story is one of a never-ending quest for harmony. As a student, he
studied comparative religions and philosophy while traveling through
Japan, China and India. In India, inspired by Ghandi’s philosophy, he
began to think about the role of the schoolteacher in creating a more
peaceful world. As his online biography says: “Accepting the reality
of violence, he would seek to incorporate ways to explore harmony in
various situations. This exploration would take form in the framework
of a game – something that students would enjoy. Within the game
data space, they would be challenged, while enhancing collaborative
and communication skills.” In 1978, at the Richmond Community
High School, Hunter led the first sessions of his World Peace Game, a
hands-on political simulation. The game has now been played around
the world, on a four-tiered board. It’s the subject of the new film World
Peace and Other 4th-Grade Achievements.

#mortepstein
Mort Epstein has had a lifetime of involvement in social and political
causes and in artistic pursuits as a designer, woodworker and teacher.
From his start as the son of New York City immigrants, to his 95th
year in 2012, Mort has covered a lot of territory, producing creative
work along the way. Mort attended WPA art and cartooning classes in
Manhattan, where he was exposed to radical political conversations
typical of the Depression years of the 1930s. Mort became committed
to equal rights and opportunity for all, concepts that have been the
guiding principles of his life. In 1937 Mort attended The Cooper Union
School of Art, where he developed his life-long commitment to the
design principles of directness, simplicity and the Bauhaus idea that
“form follows function.” Mort entered the U.S. Army in 1942, spending
three years as a designer and model maker. Strong advocates for civil
rights in the 1950s, Mort and his wife Marion were active locally in
the movement for racial equality. They provided graphic design and
artwork, participating in marches and other public demonstrations. In
the 1960s and 70s Mort’s political involvement was three-fold. He was
active in the fair housing movement which assisted African American
families who wanted to find homes in segregated white areas of greater
Cleveland.
Continued on the next page...

75. He participated in the anti-Vietnam War/pro-peace movement, and
was a member of the Cleveland Committee on Soviet Anti-Semitism.
Community involvement in the 1980s included serving as president
of the board of The Art Studio at MetroHealth Medical Center. Mort
remains actively involved in the ACLU.
Mort started an independent graphic design company based in the
Old Arcade, called Community Graphic. He had many commercial
accounts, and provided below cost or free graphic services for social
service agencies on tight budgets. Mort joined forces with John
Szilagyi and formed Epstein & Szilagyi, Designers, Inc., which thrived
for 21 years. When Epstein & Szilagyi disbanded in the 1980s, Mort
formed another partnership, a firm known today as Epstein Design
Partners Inc. Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012, Epstein Design
continues to be an influential and well-respected firm in the city of
Cleveland.
Beginning in the late 1960s, Mort also taught in the Graphic Design
Department at the Cleveland Institute of Art, helping develop a program

Investigator, leads an international team of researchers investigating
treatment and prevention options for malaria at the School of
Medicine’s Center for Global Health & Diseases which is home to a

million people annually and hampers the modernization of endemic
countries. Dr. Grimberg’s research is focused on the cell biology of
malaria parasites. Widespread drug resistance to current treatments
has further limited treatment options for those in need. This challenge
drives the mission of Dr. Grimberg’s lab, which focuses on screening
traditionally used native treatments to develop new drugs. Additionally,
he is working on the development of new antimalarial vaccines and
