How does Digital Infrastructure in the Thames Gateway Compare? “The United Kingdom has embraced the commercial Internet and is now home to the largest per capita e-commerce market and the second-largest online-advertising market globally”. Source: The Boston Consulting Group, The Connected Kingdom Report, October 2010 International business leaders rated communications infrastructure as the second most attractive facet of investing in the UK. Source: Ernst & Young’s 2010 UK Attractiveness survey They also rated the quality of telecommunications as a key reason for choosing a location in Europe, with London identified as having the best infrastructure amongst European cities by a considerable margin. Source: Think London, European Cities Survey, November 2010
Connectivity in the Thames Gateway Range of broadband options to suit needs of consumers and SMEs Most Londoners having access to fibre-based super-fast broadband by the end of 2011 (>90%) Higher speed options (up to 10Gbps) to suit more demanding requirements of bigger organisations Significant wi-fi availability to meet access requirements when out of the office (> 180k hotspots in London from BT Group alone) Complemented by mobile coverage London is already one of the best connected cities in the world and our investment plan will ensure that it stays ahead of the pack.

Leaving no one behind It is not just a question of getting the infrastructure right, but also ensuring everyone can benefit. Nearly 25 per cent of London homes are still not taking advantage of broadband. BT is committed to ensuring that everyone is able to reap the benefits which the internet brings. BT’s IT Ambassador programme mentors students and supports teachers in delivering parts of the STEM agenda in schools The BT Community Connections Award helps to connect voluntary and community groups across London which can’t afford internet access. BT works closely with Age Concern to ensure older people are able to take advantage of the benefits technology can bring. It is estimated that a 10 percentage point increase in broadband penetration would increase GDP by about 1.2 per cent in developed economies “...today, technological innovation has – with astonishing speed – developed the opportunity to spread information and decentralise power in a way we have never seen before.” David Cameron, Prime Minister and Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister
A Partnership Approach Excellent infrastructure to meet diverse needs in the London Thames Gateway Key locations in Kent and Essex covered An opportunity to work with public and private sector partners to address any identified gaps “Working in partnership will be key to the successful development of the digital infrastructure in the Thames Gateway. The entire Thames Gateway can have its own world-class superfast broadband network if we start planning now.“
