Tamar Witkin Marcus (Tamari) was born to an artistic family, her father was
an renown sculptor, Isaac Witkin, (d. 2006) and mother, Thelma Appel, a
fine artist, painter and collagist who has exhibited widely. She was born in
London, England, where her parents met each other in Art School, and
was spent her early childhood in Bennington, Vermont, where her father
was a Professor of Fine Art; Sculpture and Life Drawing.
She began music studies before leaving the continent, and
continued right through Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art
where she was a voice major and accompanied the Junior and Senior
choruses at the piano, went on to earn her BFA from Purchase College,
SUNY, in piano performance (mentor: Artur Balsam, Chamber Pianist and
German Diez, (assistant to Claudio Arrau, Beethoven Specialist) and
composition for film, and MM in Piano Performance and MM in
comparative literature music in film studies; composition, from Indiana
University School of Music, Bloomington, IN, where she also sang
comprimario roles in operatic productions, alto in the contemporary music
ensemble, (CME), and worked as an accompanist/vocal coach and
chamber music pianist. She has taught General Music in public school, K-
4, as well as held a private studio for piano & voice students beginning to
advanced, and began studying and teaching guitar to beginners. She
has sung in ensembles, operatic performances, and choirs, as well as
done vocal coaching, conducting and direction. One of her
compositions for choir won honorable mention in the Guild of Temple
Musicians contest. Published article in the Musical Quarterly trade
magazine.
In 2005, Tamari added guitar playing to her skills as a musician, and
has acquired enough skill with the acoustic instrument to offer instruction
of the fundamentals to beginning guitar students. In the early 2000’s, She
recorded her first virtuosic solo piano album, Reflections of a Golden Time,
to which her graphic designer husband put together the accompanying
booklet, and created illustrative music videos to some of the major
compositions on the album. Those will be posted online, soon.
Shortly after the creation of this album of her polished performances, she
attended Connecticut’s Alternate Route To Teacher Certification, (the
ARC program in Bloomfield, CT), where she trained to teach music in
public school, learning how to incorporate Kodaly, Orff, Suzuki and
Dalcroze methods of pedagogy, as well as class management
techniques. She did her student teaching in New Britain H.S., and taught
General Music K-6, in a prominent Fairfield County School District for the
better part of an academic year, when she realized this was not the path
she would like to pursue long term. However, it was during this experience
she discovered her love of working with children in a classroom music
setting and helping students work with each other cooperatively to learn
and perform music.
