What and Where is a Grade 1
Ankle Sprain?
• Slight stretching of
    the ligament and
    some damage to
    the fibers of the
    ligaments http://pediatrics.med.nyu.edu/conditions-we-

• May be able to walk
                           treat/conditions/ankle-sprain

    without pain or limp
• Located on the
    ankle joint of the
    leg
                                 http://www.creativerehab.net/images/Ankle%201.jpg
What bony structures are
involved?

• Talus
• Fibula
• Calcaneus

               content/uploads/2012/04/ankle-sprain-drawing.jpg
The Ligaments Involved
• Calcaneofibular
  ligament
• Anterior talofibular
  ligament

                         http://www.cobrabrigade.com/ankle2.jpg
The two common ligaments involved
      in a mild ankle sprain.
Initial Signs and Symptoms
•
• Worsening of pain when
     walking, standing, pressing
     on the sore area, or
     moving the ankle inward
• Inability to move the ankle http://img.ehowcdn.com/article-new/ds-
                                                         photo/getty/article/154/211/56569779_XS.jpg
     joint without pain
• Popping or tearing sound
at the time of the injury
     (possibly)
Pain, swelling, and bruising around the ankle http://enotes.tripod.com/pict9.jp
                                                                                        g

                                                sprain-Symptoms-Prevention-and-
                                                Treatment.jpg
Treatment of Mild Ankle
Sprain
• R.I.C.E.

• R-Rest the ankle by not
    walking on it
• I-Ice should be applied
    immediately. To keep
    swelling down. (20-30
    min.)
• C- Compression
    bandages or ace-wraps http://medicalimages.allrefer.com/large/early-treatment-of-injury.jpg

    immobilize and support
    ankle
• E- Elevate ankle above
    heart for about 48hrs.
Treatment continued...
- Isometric exercises

-Full range of motion
stretching/strengthening exercises as
tolerated

-No splinting or casting

-Weight bearing as tolerated
Prognosis
• Recovery time depends
    upon the severity of the
    ankle sprain and possible
    accompanying injuries. But
    2-3 weeks of rehabilitation
    should allow the ankle to
    be fully recovered.

• Exercises should be
    started to maintain
    flexibility and strength
    when the swelling has
    resolved and the patient
    can walk without pain. http://goortho.net/img/plantar_flexion.gif
