1. Radio Show Reviews.
We first came about with the idea of doing a Deep House show because Ken had a good
understanding of the genre, I went online and looked about for the top Deep House
music that was out at the time and Ken advised me on whether it was worth putting on
the show or now, we listened to a few radio shows each, I went on the Deep House
Lounge and had a listen in one of our shows and I got a real feel for how the show
should be like. We also had an ex student from the college who is now working at the
north Manchester Radio station come in to tell us a what it’s like working in radio, and
he gave us a few tips on how to be like when we are recording our radio shows.
When we were recording the radio shows we had quite a lot of equipment to use, we
had to learn how to use the mics, the sound board, a program called reaper to create or
jingles and the hand held sound recording kit. We used the sound recording kit to
record ourselves speaking for the jingle, then we went on to reaper to edit it and put
music in the background and bend the volumes so that we could hear the voices over
the music more clearly. We edited the FX and the pitch of it all at the end as well. I think
the songs that I chose for the jingles were good because they matched the genre of
music that we were playing. Then we went into the radio room and uploaded them to
the radio set and learnt how to play them, change the levels of volume, and make
playlists so that we could concentrate on speaking our news parts without worrying
about the set stopping. Whenever we needed to speak the mics would have to be turned
on and kept the right distance away to ensure that the speaking wasn’t too loud. Mixing
them all together took a couple of lessons to learn but I think I got the hang of it, after
every song we faded it out then played the jingle and maybe spoke or promote
something depending on what show we were doing. We knew what we were doing all
because of the schedule that we made, so we didn’t forget any key parts to the show.
altogether I was happy with our shows, we did mess it up a couple of times but we went
back into the recording studio and retried so that the mistakes weren’t in the final piece.
We probably could of done the speaking a bit more smoothly seen as we only had a few
lessons in the room we didn’t have the most confidence. Our shows genres were deep
house and then just a general feel good song based show so me and my partner ken had
a good perspective of the songs being played and what the audience would like to hear.
If we were to go back and do different shows I think I would of done more speaking to
boost my confidence, also longer shows, I think both our shows only just made it past
the required amount of time. Another thing I would do differently is more variation on
both shows, on one of the shows we only had one genre, some people may like that but
it wouldn’t cover a big audience. Even though the show was bases on one genre I think
we managed to get some good music on there and please the target audience, even the
news was relative to those who would listen to the music, we know this because Ken,
my partner, listened to deep house frequently. I don’t think there was much Dead Air in
2. the shows as well, we were paying close attention to when the song were changing and
were ready to play the jingles. Same goes for the news and other speaking parts.
