CITY STORY - RÂMNICU VÂLCEA
eTwinning Plus
Scoala Gimnaziala Nr. 10
RM. VÂLCEA
Story
The area has been inhabited since Dacian and Roman times, and was
the site of a castrum. Râmnicu Vâlcea was first attested during the
rule of Prince Mircea cel Bătrân, as "the princely town of Râmnic"
(4 September 1388), and confirmed as the seat of a Vâlcea
County during the same period (8 January 1392).
“MIRCEA CEL BATRAN” PARK
Story
The Park “Mircea cel Bătrân” is located at one hundred
meters from the “kilometer 0” of the city Râmnicu Vâlcea.
About the walls surrounding it, some say it would be relics of
the princely fortress of Mircea cel Bătrân. Therefore, the main
entrance is watched, since 1970, by the statue of Mircea cel
Bătrân, work of the sculptor Ion Irimescu.
The story of this historic monument begins
with the family Socoteanu about which
Nicolae Iorga said that they were the only
true aristocrats from Râmnic.
In ”Mircea cel Bătrân” Park is the statue of the
poet George Ţărnea, an imposing figure for the
Romanian contemporary poetry. Born on Vâlcea
lands, he remained bound irreversibly of Râmnicu
Vâlcea.
ZAVOI PARK
Story
"Zăvoi" Park is one of the oldest parks in the country taking
birth almost 170 years ago, by princely Ofis issued by Prince
Barbu Știrbey. Here, on July 29, 1848, was sworn on the
Revolutionary Constitution, and the choir led by Anton Pann
has intoned the future state anthem "Awaken thee, Romanian!".
Barbu Dimitrie Stirbey
Barbu Dimitrie Ştirbei, also written as Stirbey, (b. Craiova, 1799 - d. Nice, April 13,
1869), a member of the Bibescu boyar family, was a Prince of Wallachia on two occasions,
between 1848–1853 and between 1854–1856. Born to Dumitrache Bibescu and his wife,
he was adopted by his maternal grandfather, the last of the Ştirbei family who left him heir to
his wealth and family name.
Story
At the entrance to the park is, from 1920, a statuary group known
as “the Renaissance” or “Romania emancipation”, work of the
sculptor Constantin Gheorghe Mihăilescu. The statue embodies the
desire for freedom and independence of the Romanian people,
expressed through the efforts of a strong man flexing in the struggle
for emancipation of the country, which comes to light and is
represented by a young woman half detached from the rock.
