Das Semantic Web beschreibt weitgehend zwar zukünftige Grundlagen und Möglichkeiten des WWW, steht aber auch in direktem Zusammenhang mit gegenwärtigen Projekten. Für den Bereich des kulturellen Erbes sind wichtige Grundlagen für das semantische Netz mit Standards wie dem CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model bereits heute verfügbar.
