The Eiffel Tower was designed and built by Gustave Eiffel's company for the 1889 Paris Exposition, though it was not intended to be permanent. During WWII, the French cut the lift cables so Hitler would have to climb the stairs if he wanted to reach the top. There are over 30 replicas of the tower worldwide, and it features over 20,000 light bulbs, while inventor Franz Reichelt tragically died testing his parachute by jumping from the tower.
