7. Research (Gartner)
• There are many ways of calculating the direct cost of
downtime. Depending on the business, analysts say
that losses can range from £1,000 per hour to
£100,000 or more. Added to that are hidden elements
like lost productivity and customer confidence, penalty
payments, and hiring extra equipment and staff to deal
with the crisis. A recent study of retailers by analyst
company Gartner found that 21 of the 50 companies
surveyed had suffered a data breach. Most, however,
hadn’t told their customers for fear of losing business.
And most were either fined or threatened with fines by
credit card companies for non‐compliance with
industry regulations on data protection

8. Research (IDC)
• A 2007 study by the research group IDC
showed that 92%of European midsize
companies had experienced a laptop loss or
theft in 2007 and 54% in the previous six
months alone. They said 58% of the cost of
data loss isn’t hardware‐related but due to
factors like productivity – it can take several
days to replace a laptop – and the loss of
customer confidence.

9. Research (Contingency Research)
• A study by Contingency Research discussed in
Germany's CIO magazine in March 2007
showed that downtime costs can be
estimated at £28,000 per hour for a
manufacturing company; £90,000 for a
logistics or retail firm; and a breathtaking £6.5
million per hour for a financial broker. In this
case, even 10 minutes downtime would cost
over a million dollars, underlining the
necessity to prevent systems going down in
the first place

10. The Business Challenge
Maintaining high availability
• An unexpected system crash is difficult for any
company. But for companies with limited IT
resources, having business operations suddenly
come to a halt can be extremely disruptive. Agility
and the ability to respond quickly to customer
demands are among the main competitive
advantages of midsize companies. System downtime
– even for a short time – can compromise these
advantages.

11. How Oracle can help
Maintaining high availability
• Companies can minimize risks and ensure business continuity
with the multi‐level protection built in to the Oracle Database
11g Standard Edition with Real Application Clusters (RAC). As
well as safeguarding a company’s information assets from
internal and external threats, this solution provides failover
security so that operations are immediately switched to a
different server in the event of a system outage. In addition,
automated, real‐time data backup ensures no data is lost. Oracle
Active Data Guard 11g automatically reallocates resource‐
intensive tasks to standby servers, increasing the availability and
performance of the main database. Finally, Oracle solutions
consolidate all data assets, making it easier and more cost‐
effective to store, retrieve, manage and audit data whenever
required.

12. The Business Challenge
Avoiding the costs of data loss and downtime
• Dealing with data loss – resulting from downtime, theft or any
other unforeseen event – can be particularly disruptive for
midsize companies. Normal business operations may be
interrupted while staff resolves the problem. Also, managers
may need to report the loss to relevant authorities,
customers, suppliers and others. The organization may even
face fines, litigation or other action by regulatory bodies or
customers. And these incidents can continue to impact a
company’s brand and reputation over the long term.

13. How Oracle can help
Avoiding the costs of data loss and downtime
• Oracle provides robust security from data loss by
protecting information from a multitude of threats.
For example, comprehensive ID management
ensures access to data by authorized users – and no‐
one else. Also, multiple levels of security ensure that
data is encrypted on the fly, minimizing risk even in
the event of a lost or stolen laptop. And solutions are
available to protect information assets from insider
misuse by limiting privileged users’ access to
sensitive data (known as segregation of duties).

14. The Business Challenge
Increasing productivity
• Many midsize organizations are aware that they
need to build business continuity safeguards into
their IT infrastructure, but fear that these will impact
productivity and be hard to manage.
Understandably, they don’t want security to
compromise efficiency. And with limited IT
resources, their business continuity technology
needs to add tangible value to the business as well
as preventing downtime and data loss.

15. How Oracle can help
Increasing productivity
• Oracle's centralized, consolidated infrastructure includes
productivity tools that save time, cut costs and make
information more accessible and easier to work with. Key data
protection tasks and processes can easily be automated so
that IT staff can concentrate on more productive work. Also,
Oracle solutions integrate easily into most environments,
including Windows, Unix and Linux, and are simple to install
and manage. Oracle Active Data Guard 11g provides an
additional contribution to productivity by accelerating
database performance. It diverts resource‐intensive
application processes to standby servers, increasing the
availability of the main database, while continuously backing
up all data.
