In a knowledge-based economy, the creation of wealth becomes synonymous with creating products and services with large software content. However, despite a few major players, the software industry as a whole is fragmented and consists mainly of small, niche market entrepreneurial ventures. The authors study the California software industry to characterize the major barriers to success for these ventures. Simultaneously, a fundamental shift of software technology to a component-based development paradigm will reinforce the industry’s fragmented nature by fuelling a third party, independent software component economy. Coupled with the globalization of the IT industry in general, the need for startups and small companies to form strategic partnerships will become increasingly critical to their ability to create wealth. In recent years, innovative public–private partnerships have attempted to assist startups by addressing their lack of physical resources or capital. This is best illustrated by the dramatic growth of incubators and regional capital networks. In this paper, the authors propose a ‘‘ virtual incubator’’ model to facilitate startup success and business network formation, shifting the focus to the ‘‘ virtual value chain’’ and to connecting startups with business expertise and strategic partners in the marketplace. The authors provide a theoretical basis for the model and its implementation, important to potential investors in virtual incubators.

Traditional operational and supply chain operations are often driven by speed, efficiency and cost reductions for large businesses to thrive on operations leverage. Products or services provided by suppliers and contract manufacturers are frequently normalized in prices and benchmarked against commodity prices. Sourcing/ purchasing functions often strive to engage and develop meaningful relationships with tried, tested and proven suppliers to meet the matching drivers of supply chain operations. Sourcing thrives on generating competitiveness amongst suppliers that enables the strategic negotiation of price- value reductions; the larger the pool of matching suppliers, the better the bargaining power of sourcing. However, with increasing labor and wage costs of manufacturing in domestic markets, many suppliers of traditionally manufactured products have relocated their manufacturing operations to China to keep operating margins low. A shift in the competitive architecture is recommended for sourcing operations to access new areas of innovation. Exploratory frameworks for synthesizing innovation through suppliers include (1) Core-competence and R&D networks of the outsource supplier (2) Enabling design centricity of supplier’s products to target consumer profiles (3) Suppliers with new materials/ methods wanting to break into local markets, with a potential disruptive impact.

I often storyboard a presentation before assembling it in Keynote. I thought it may be interesting to share the storyboard for a presentation I did for a CMO conference in Johannesburg in September 2012. The presentation dealt with the development of strategies for an era of volatility, uncertainity, complexity and ambiguity.

The present study analyzes the relationship between ICT investments and productivity in the Colombian manufacturing industry. It uses information from the second Survey of Development and Technological Innovation (Encuesta de Desarrollo e Innovación Tecnológica - EDIT) performed in 2005. The EDIT survey asks about investment decisions on innovation and technological development, amounts invested, reasons for investing, occupation level and quality of employed personnel, financing mechanisms and loan commitments, effect of innovation, among others. Due to the fact that the EDIT did not pose questions on firm performance variables, we use complementary data from the Annual Manufacturing Survey (Encuesta Anual Manufacturera - EAM) of 2004.

Innovation is a productive process which relies on human resources and investment in capital assets procurement, machinery and/or equipments intended for technological development and innovation activities. If the production function at the microeconomic level is the relationship between productive factors and output, capital allocated to ICT can be taken as another productive factor, in the same way as capital, work and human capital. The relative ease of access to ICT, due to their fast price reduction and quality increase, and to the fact that they are considered general purpose technologies, have led various scholars to propose that ICT, due to their effect on cost reductions of coordination among individuals and firms, may produce a change in firm structure. Likewise, innovation also has an effect on productivity, mainly through total factor productivity but also by interacting with other factors such as capital or human capital. This innovation refers to technologically new processes and products, either at firm, local, country or global level. The emphasis on novelty does not mean to make more of the same, but to expand human knowledge frontier, observing that what is novel may also be applied at firm or country level. Therefore, when we speak about innovation, we must understand that what is new for a particular country may not be new at international level.

The present study undertakes a critical review of the research around the multi-significant issue of the correlation between the IT investments and the economic performance to both micro and macroeconomic level. The aim of this study is to shed light on the interaction of IT with the economy, at corporate, industry and national level and document it¢ s contribution to productivity and therefore to economic growth. My conclusion is that there is a positive effect of IT investments to both the above economic indicators in all aspects, but is something that needs further research so as to find a more clear and risk adjusted relation.

Successive increases in R&D that creates new functionality are essential for global competitiveness. However, unexpectedly, as a consequence of the two-faced nature of information and communication technology (ICT), excessive R&D results in a marginal productivity decline leading to a decrease in digital value creation. In order to overcome such a dilemma, global ICT firms have been endeavoring to transform themselves into disruptive business model. Neo open innovation that harnesses soft innovation resources may be a solution to this critical question. On the basis of an empirical analysis focusing on forefront endeavors to this dilemma by global ICT firms, this paper attempted to demonstrate the above hypothetical view. Noteworthy findings suggestive to transforming the traditional business model into disruptive innovation that satisfies people’s demand corresponding to their shift inpreferences in the digital economy is thus provided. In addition, a new concept for R&D resources in the digital economy is postulated.

As in the real world, the digital economy has also thrown up its share of shifting buzzwords. From ‘e-Commerce’ and ‘dot.com’ at the turn of the century, the last couple of years have thrown up ‘ICT’ as the all encompassing technology and for business the newest buzz is undoubtedly ‘outsourcing’. Rarely has a single trend impacted global business and industry these last few years as much as outsourcing or ‘off-shoring’ as it is referred to in the US. Coming along with the compulsions of globalisation mandated by the WTO agreements it has helped develop new markets, improved bottom lines, expanded the range of goods and services and pulled the planet together into a tighter-knit community. This opportunity of outsourcing from the perspective of developing economies is ICT services export.

Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other. Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.
