Operations and tasks The National Library of Sweden has three main duties • collect and preserve the Swedish cultural heritage concerning text and audiovisual media, and make the material available to the public • serve as a research library, with a primary emphasis on the humanities and social sciences • serve as the infrastructure for the Swedish research community & promote cooperation for the Swedish library sector 16 juli 2012 Sidnummer 4

- A sketch of the library’s architectural design The main building of the library opened to the general public on January 1, 1878 .
- Creating a new center 1878 marks a clear turning point for the library. 1. After a rousing and lively parliamentary debate, the library moves from the political and administrative center of Stockholm to its outskirts. 2. The library abandons its very close historical ties to the special environment of the Royal Castle and thereby also to the Royal Family. 3. The library gains a new identity as an independent institution with national distinction and international ties. Not only are the architecture and design of the new quarters innovative; the mission of the library as a national repository of Swedish printed cultural heritage and as an internationally acclaimed research library is underscored.

- Since January 1 2009, KB is formally invested with the authority to develop the national audiovisual collections, a task previously held by the Swedish National Archive of Recorded Sound and Moving Images 20 million units: books, posters, images, manuscripts and commercial imprints . achieved by a centuries-old tradition of legal deposit Since 1661, legal deposit ordinances have guaranteed access to Sweden’s published heritage, as well as to materials in Swedish published elsewhere. Since 1979, these ordinances have included even audiovisual media forms The purpose of this ordinance was to serve primarily as a control mechanism rewarding and reinforcing required behaviors, not to safeguard national heritage Ordinance of 1661. All printers were compelled to submit two copies of every printed work to the Royal Chancellary. One copy to KB, another to RA. In conjunction with the introduction of the Freedom of the Press Act in 1766, legal deposit also served to safeguard the lecacy of books and the printed word in Sweden. (NYTT) KB possesses the most representative collection of Swedish cultural heritage in print to be found anywhere in the world Under the current order, printers are obliged to submit one copy to KB and six to the major university libraries. Materials in, audiovisual formats must be delivered to the Audiovisual Media Department. The collections reflect more than 100 years of growth and innovation of media technology. The holdings contain more than 8 million hours of radio, TV and music.
- Digitization – our priorities are newspapers, governmental official reports and other frequently used refernce works, manuscripts mostly medeavel manuscripts but also more recent manuscripts from authors´ private archives, ephemera. That can be material from Companies, Associations, Institutions, and Organizations. Political Party Election Propaganda.
- Digidaily project will result in 3 milion pages – two of the largest newspapers in Sweden. Aftonbladet from 1830 and Svenska dagbladet fropm 1884. We hope we will go on with part II of this project another year and by then we will have another 3 million pages, that could be the two other large Swedish newspapers. Expressen and Dagens nyheter. That would cover a major part of the most frequently used newspapers. Newspapers are traditionally printed on paper that is not designed to last longer than a few days or weeks before being thrown away. Therefore, a newspaper from 1850 will most likely be in poor condition. But we are quite lucky having extra copies for most of the large newspapers in Sweden.
- To coordinate library development This centre, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, helps institutions and individuals navigate the ever changing topography of the flow of information The National Union Catalogue, used by over 300 instituions of higher education and research libraries, comes under its aegis. It is the work of a network of libraries and informants. Libris in not only a catalogue. It is also inlcudes an inter-library loan module, public search engines and provides even other services. It is maintained by operational and developmental units at the library. These units define and devise standards for metadata and other cataloging needs. They maintain even proprietary systems of library classification. The BIBSAM unit specialises in licensing, forming consortia aimed at improving the bargaining power of Swedish institutions vis-a-vis publishers. The Open Access Unit strives to guarantee Swedish institutions and individuals unrestricted access via the Internet to peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles. NYTT om folkbibliotek With the incorporation of a special allocation system of the Ministry of Culture on January 1, 2011, KB has been the central regulatory authority for the entire Swedish library system, including the public library sector. In addition to its other administrative and professional tasks, this authority gathers statistical data and financially supports innovative library-oriented initiatives. This new authority enables KB to identify new partners and engage them in constructive dialogue .
- The National Library is currently undergoing a refurbishment that will provide a modern place for students, researchers and staff. This is an old building from 1878 and it is very charming but it is ca be quite difficult to to work in. The Library building or parts of it is protected as a cultural heritage building. That is always a challenge. Anyway we are very happy to be able to move back in our offices in August this year. The Annex will be ready next spring 2013. 135 years later.
