4. Single Base ULDs We have started to replace our fleet of double base LD3 ULDs with lighter single base composite units. By replacing 5000 units we will realize an annual fuel savings of 2 million gallons and reduce carbon emissions by 6 million pounds. AA Purchasing

5. Parking Garage Lighting By installing 1,700 LED light fixtures in the headquarters parking garages, American Airlines is saving enough energy to power 150 average US homes for a year. AA Purchasing

6. Boeing Main-Ship Batteries We are evaluating Marathon Norco to supply our main-ship batteries for Boeing 737/757/767. They have recently been awarded an ISO 14001 certificate which recognizes environmental awareness excellence, and are the only US battery OEM that has this certificate. Their batteries also provide a 4-5% weight reduction which will create fuel savings for the entire fleet. AA Purchasing

7. Toner Cartridge Recycling Verity Group and AA are working on a toner cartridge recycling program in order to dispose of cartridges in an environmentally friendly manner. Annual waste avoidance for this program is around four tons AA Purchasing

8. LAX GSE Fuel Source Beginning in 2012, much of our ground service equipment at LAX will run on renewable synthetic diesel fuel produced in California from urban green waste (ie. yard clippings.) AA Purchasing

9. Green Jet Fuels AA signed a memorandum of understanding with a company that is developing jet fuel using oils from camelina, a rotational crop that grows in the western United States AA Purchasing

10. Trucking Routes American Airlines recently started pooling small loads on their existing truckloads. Through this, AA is reducing the amount of CO2 emissions released in the transportation of goods AA Purchasing

11. Clecos from Maintenance Bases American Airlines is now sending clecos to be cleaned and refurbished. Through this program, AA has reduced the number of discarded clecos by 10,000 per year. AA Purchasing

12. Reclamation Area Instead of throwing away damaged/unused parts, Tulsa finds local repair agents willing to work these parts, thus keeping them out of landfills and junkyards. AA Purchasing

13. Engine Wash Program American regularly washes our jet engines across our fleet, which in-turn increases the efficiency of our engines and reduces fuel burn and carbon emissions. AA Purchasing

14. TAESL Paint Booth New paint booth installed at TAESL requires less paint, and improves employee health through increased ventilation and breathing air systems. AA Purchasing

15. On-board Wheelchairs New lightweight on-board wheelchairs will be introduced in the fall of 2010. Carbon emissions are expected to be reduced by up to 350,000 pounds. AA Purchasing

16. Amenity Kit Burt’s Bees cosmetic items included in the kit (Milk and Honey Body Lotion and Beeswax Lip Balm) are 100% natural and the majority of the packaging is made from recycled products. AA Purchasing

17. New Water Bottles By utilizing a new manufacturer for American’s on-board water bottles, American will reduce carbon emissions by 1,000 pounds and plastic usage by 20,000 pounds.

18. Lightweight Seat Cushions Coach seat cushions in the 767 are expected to be replaced starting May 2010, and the MD80 fleet is expected to be replaced in 2011. This project has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 600,000 pounds. AA Purchasing

19. Lightweight Seat Cover Trials Current plan to test lightweight fabric and leather has the potential of reducing carbon emissions by 5.3 million pounds per year if implemented across the entire American fleet. AA Purchasing
