• Establishing New High – Tech Industries
Work at ITRI have extended the boundaries of IC design, flat – panel
displays, and CD drives
Examples :
– Taiwan became the world’s 4th largest IC supplier
• In 2001, IC packaging and IC foundry industries rank # 1, while
IC design sector ranks second in worldwide output
• Taiwanese notebook PC, many peripheral devices and wireless
LAN products have had a dominating presence since late 1990’s

• Upgrading Traditional Industries
Research at ITRI has led to improvements in a diverse range of fields, including
– Automotive Industry – ITRI developed a common (1,200 CC) engine for
domestic cars with cooperation from Great Britain’s Lotus Engineering Co.
– Precision Machinery
ITRI has developed PC – based controllers, plant automation services.
Taiwan is no. 6 in export of advanced tools and machinery.
– Textile Industry
ITRI developed high – speed spinning process, greatly improved the
throughput

• Leading the Drive for Sustainable Growth
– Resource usage
ITRI has developed an efficient water recovery system. The system
can reclaim 70% of waste water incurred in IC manufacturing.
– Waste Treatment
ITRI has developed a new up-stream anaerobic sludge bed (modified
UASB) waste water treatment technology. Compared with conventional
activated sludge method, the new technology saves 30 – 60 % in land
and capital cost.

ITRI’s broad scope of research, excellent facilities, close industrial
ties and interdisciplinary approach combine to make a uniquely effective
hotbed for talents critical to the future of industries. Although ITRI is not
an educational institution, it is one of the biggest suppliers of industrial
leaders in Taiwan
The Science - based Industrial Park, with US$ 27 billion in annual
output, has some 4,900 ITRI alumni. They are the key factor of the
success of that establishment.
