1. STUDY CASE
CLASSROOM OBSERVATION TASK 1: STUDY CASE
Aim: Identifying and defining a student for a “Study Case”
Week: 17.10.16 – 23.10.16
Choose a student from your class and complete the following information.
Student-teacher’s name: Valentina Espinosa Mora
Student’s Name: Joaquin Alarcon
Grade: 8th grade
Sex: Male
Describe his / her attitude during the class.
Joaquin is a distracted boy, who also distracts his classmates, even though the teacher
does not allow students to move or speak during the class. He usually does not
accomplish the activities given by the teacher unless he noticed he is been monitored;
however there are some exceptions, sometimes Joaquin works quietly and does not
disturb the rest of the class.
Why did you choose him / her as your “Study Case?”
I chose Joaquin, because I believe that he can change his attitude and behavior if
someone puts a bit of interest on him and helps him understands what is needed in the
class, because, sometimes, his misbehavior and disruptive attitude is caused by
misunderstanding the instructions, or boredom.
Observe the student throughout two consecutive lessons, and note down repetitive behavior
/ attitudes the student presents during those lessons
Weeks Repetitive Behavior
23.10 – 04.11 He hits the classmates that are near him. He listens to music instead of
doing the activities. He plays games on the computer. He bothers his
classmates by pressing the keyboard of the computers of his classmates.
07.11 – 11.11 Joaquin speaks and sings loudly in the class when everybody is working
on their tasks, he hits his classmates on the head and he plays computer
games instead of doing the activities given by the teacher.
After observing him / her, choose that attitude which is most repeated and devise a brief
ACTION PLAN to implement with the student:
The plan to help Joaquin change a bit his bothering attitude is to monitor him and guide
him while working; differentiated kind of activities will be prepared for him in order to
engage him and make the English class more attractive for him. Additionally, Joaquin
will be sit next to Anais, a student who has a higher level of English so she can help
Joaquin when he has a doubt, they will work together, so they will help each other,
besides, at the same time she will be helped in return, because she is a shy students, so
working with Joaquin and monitoring him will make her increase her self-confidence.
2. CLASSROOM OBSERVATION TASK 2: STUDY CASE
Aim: Implementation of action plan with the student.
After the observation, implement your action plan with the student, in at least two lessons:
Implementation 1 Implementation 2
Dates: 14.11.16 – 18.11.16 21.11.16 – 25.11.16
In no more than 70 words, describe what you really did and what you were able to
accomplish:
At the beginning, Anais was reluctant to sit next to Joaquin and work with him, but later
she accepted, on the other hand, Joaquin was happy to work with Anais and had any
problem with that, I was only monitoring their work and behavior. The first day, Joaquin
kept bothering his classmates but less than before, but the second lesson Joaquin focused
more on working and didn’t bother his classmates around him.
FINAL REFLECTION: STUDY CASE
After observing the student and implementing your action plan, reflect on the following
questions:
What went well?
The seat changing worked very well, they both complemented a lot, Anais controlled
Joaquin’s behavior effectively and achieved Joaquin worked in the activities prepared for
him
What went wrong?
I could not focus as much as I wanted on guiding Joaquin and monitoring him.
What would you do differently?
I would applied activities in which students can move and interact one another, because
in that way I would’ve engaged more Joaquin and the rest of the class in learning, so
students who have different learning styles participate and learn in the way they need.
