Crystal Cove
“Where great miners
think alike!”
2. Rise and Fall
of Crystal
Cove-
Industry
• Crystal Cove was founded on the
diamond industry. Rich band of scholars
found and personally funded the
expedition.
• We attracted many investors and soon
became an attraction for everyday
people in need of jobs. Soon our city
was booming.
• Revenues- Custom made diamonds,
tourism, real-estate, etc.
3. Rise and Fall of
Crystal Cove-
Reasons for
Decline
• The mines ran dry (there was a shortage
in supply causing a spike in prices ) We
were in a recession.
• Ailments struck many of the workers and
citizens (mainly respiratory problems)
• Lots of particulate matter and air
pollution
• Eventually we were shut down by the
government. It was too expensive to
keep it running without profit and Crystal
Cove’s environment was past the point
of saving to lets-get-out-of-here!!!!
4. Rise and Fall of
Crystal Cove-
Decline/
Environmental
Damage
• Investors , stockholders, and factory
owners go broke along with the city.
• No source of revenue
• Everyone leaves town
• Companies can’t or are unwilling to
follow expensive safety regulations.
• Crystal Cove becomes Crystal Don’t!!!
• Deforestation
• Erosion
• Chemicals
• Biodiversity/ vegetation
• Air and Water Pollution
6. +
Restoration-
• Trees were cleared for mining. (slash and
burn, etc.)
• Deforestation is carbon positive.
• Soil Erosion
• Air Pollution (smog)
• Water Pollution (sediment and chemicals)
• Vegetation and biodiversity
7. Restoration-
Chemicals
Chemical Emissions
6.70%
CO2 Emissions: 39.2
13%
39.20%
Dioxins: 26.3
14.80%
Ground-level Ozone: 14.8
26.30%
Formaldehyde: 13
8. Restoration-
Water
• Water Cleanup:
• Flocculation- form a precipitate in
water
• Sedimentation- large slow flow tank
• Rapid Sand Filters- water moves
vertically through a sand filter with a
layer of activated carbon or
anthracite coal.
• Natural Wetlands-
Sediments, pollution, and heavy
metals
9. +
Restoration-
• Dumping industrial or agricultural waste
into any waterway is now illegal.
• Companies will have a set amount of
pollutants (CO2, particulate matter, etc.)
that they can emit depending on what
their product is.
• Crystal Cove will have a strike system
• Punishments include heavy fines, being
arrested, temporary
shutdown, permanent
shutdown(extreme cases), etc.
• Rewards include tax-breaks.

11. Energy Types
We originally used:
Coal
Nuclear
We then chose to use:
Geothermal
Wind
Solar
12. Energy
Choices
• During the summer time, heat would be
absorbed by the home and is distributed
underground to cause a cooling effect
for geothermal energy.
• While using wind energy much
maintenance is not needed, a vast
majority of land is not taken up, and its
nondepletable.
• Even though some parts of the city may
not receive as much light as the
other, this energy source can be used as
a heating system when fluids circulate
and pumps cold water into a solar
collector.
13. +
Energy
Strategy
• Wind turbines will be built on the
outskirts of the city which is also meant
to be close enough so that they can still
be connected to a transmission line.
CST’s will collect lots of solar energy with
low input. We would also like to
incorporate ground source heat pumps
in all homes to reduce the amount of
electricity needed per capita from the
grid and lower living costs. The smart
grid is a major source and will also be
used as an alternative choice for when
all else fails.
