1. THE LATE MIDDLE AGES: THE
CENTURY OF WAR, PLAGUE
AND DISORDER.
War with Scotland and
France.
2. 1328: England gave up its claim to take over
Scotland for some time after unsuccessful
attempts.
The Scots made an Alliance with France: “The
Auld Alliance.” It lasted into the 16th century.
England`s troubles with France resulted because
the French King wanted to control all his nobles.
One of the most troublesome: the duke of
Burgundy.
3. King of France interfered with England`s trade.
Gascony traded its fines wines for England`s corn and
wollen cloth.
In 1324 he took part of Gascony. It was a direct threat to
England`s wealth.
England threatened Burgundy by stopping wool exports.
So the duke of Burgundy had to make an Alliance with
England against France.
In 1337, Edward III declared the war. It was called “The
Hundred Years War”
At 1st, the English army was more successful than the
French in the battlefield because its previous wars in Wales
and Scotland.
4. In 1360, Edward III gave up his claim to the French throne.
The French recognised his ownership of Aquitance,
Normandy, Brittany, the port of Callais. But it did not
mean war had ended because the French King accepted
that situation unwillingly.
True to “The Old Alliance”, the King of Scotland had
attacked England in 1346. but he was defeated and taken
prisioner.
English forces destroyed Edinburgh.
Edward III allowed the French to ransom the Scot king and
he gave up trying to control Scotland.
For a while there was peace but the struggle between
France and England lasted into the 15th century.
