My name is Victoria Hahn, but I usually go by Tori. I graduated from Michigan State
University in August 2012 with two Bachelor’s Degrees, one in Psychology and the other in
Family Community Services. I also possess a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice from Walden
University. My goal is to acquire a career in the Human Services or Criminal Justice field in
order to help others and the community.
The strongest qualities I possess that make me stand out from others are my drive and
passion. I am that person who loves going to class and work because I am passionate about
what I do and am willing to put my job first. Proof of my drive is the fact that I was able to
achieve two Bachelor’s Degrees in four years while keeping good academic standing, making
the Dean’s List, participating in multiple programs and activities, and even having a perfect 4.0
semester. My passion can be seen through my work in the Adolescent Diversion Project, my
time spent on the executive board of HDFS Club, and my time spent teaching at-risk youth as
an intern for Capital Area Humane Society.
The Adolescent Diversion Project (ADP) was a program I had to apply to and be
interviewed for. Once I made the cut I was in a group with seven other students, and we
received our training together. After our initial training we were each assigned a case in which
we had to advocate for a youth member of the Juvenile Delinquent System. My favorite part of
this program was the research and investigation into the life of the youth. Once I was able to
figure out which areas the youth struggled in and the circumstances that they encountered, this
allowed me to better place them in community groups and activities that would improve their
overall self-worth. A year after my advocacy I was thrilled to follow up and see that my youth
had continued to be successful and active in the community, and was also still avoiding all
situations that had led to trouble in the past.
In addition to participating in ADP, I was also a member of the club for my major; Human
Development and Family Studies (HDFS). After the initial year of participation, I was excited to
try for a chance to be on the executive board. Sure enough I acquired the position of Event
Coordinator. In this position I gained experience encountering members of the Lansing and East
Lansing community and coordinating with them in order to arrange volunteer opportunities for
my club. Once the year was up, since I had done such a good job, I was re-elected to the
position of President. During my senior year I arranged and led the group meetings, oversaw
that other executive members were doing their jobs correctly, and kept track of activity events
and participant members. My favorite part of HDFS Club was being able to work with the less
fortunate in Lansing and help them in any way that I could.
Furthermore, during my senior year, I participated in an internship at the Capital Area
Humane Society in Lansing. I was the Education Intern and worked with only one other person;
my supervisor. Because she led the department all on her own, I was able to gain a lot of
experience helping plan all activities, lessons, and tours. Soon after being there, I was granted
the opportunity to give a couple tours on my own. This is where groups came in and I educated
them on what goes on in the shelter, why the shelter exists, and what they can do to help.
Before I knew it, other departments were also trying to recruit me for help. In my time as an
Intern, the part I found most rewarding was working with at-risk youth in the Lansing area. We
went to low income community centers to teach children humane treatment of animals, among
other lessons. I was sad to hear the stories of what some of the children went through at home,
and I was happy to make a small difference in their lives.
In summary, my experience working in the Lansing area with at-risk youth and juvenile
delinquents, my double major Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Family Community
Services, my Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice, along with my passion and drive make me a
great candidate. I will do whatever it takes to be successful in the Human Services or Criminal
Justice field. I know that when I get the opportunity to work I will thrive. Once you meet me, my
passion and drive will be evident and you too will believe that I will make a difference in the lives
of others.
