• Definition of Narrative Text

The telling of a story or an account of a
sequence of events. One of the four traditional
forms of composition (along with
description, exposition, and persuasion). Narration
differs from exposition, which can also relate a
sequence of events, in that narration need not be
factual and may be written from the perspective of
a character in the text.
Structure

Narratives commonly have a five-part structure
(sometimes called Freytag's Pyramid) comprising an
exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and
denouement.
Characteristic of narrative text :
1. Orientation
It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story
Are introduce
Example : Little Mantu lived in a village deep in the
Jungle where elephants helped the men with their work
2. Complication
Where the problems in the story developed
Example : Now, Mantu had an elephant of his very own.
His name is Opie
3. Resolution
Where the problems in the story is solved
Example : Mantu than climbed upon his little friend’s back and went
Home to the village
Sub-Types

Narrative text is often classified by sub-types or
genres. Some common narrative genres include
detective fiction, historical
narratives, memoirs, science fiction, fables and
myths.
The Function of Narrative text

The function of the narrative text is to inform
and entertain. Narrative text will tell the story with
amusing way. It provides an esthetic literary experience
to the reader. Narrative text is written based on life
experience. In literary term, experience is what we
do, feel, hear, read, even what we dream.
Example of narrative text story
                       “The Story of Kite”
The sun shone brightly and the west breeze blew. The kite
was flying this way and that way tied to her string. Suddenly the
string snapped. The kite was free. She soared high in the air until
she could see far, far away. The kite followed some parrots who
took her to see the rainforests. The air was cool and the kite got
wet. The kite followed some crocodiles who took her to see the
rivers. The air was misty and the kite caught a fish. The kite
followed some wallabies who took her to see the deserts. The air
was hot and the kite got tired. So the kite followed the sun who
took her back home, right to her string
