Russia, is among the largest ones in the area.

Climate: continental, with long and snowy winters and
moderately warm summers. The average temperatures
range from – -12…-15° С in January to +17…+19° С in

southeast to 665 mm in the northwest.
Natural resources available:
1. Wood – 1.2 billion cu.m. (19th in Russia in reserves).
2. Phosphorites – 2 billion tonnes (45% of Russia’s total reserves).

Natural: the state nature reserve Nurgush, 3 state wildlife preserves,
9 game preserves, 39 hydrological sites of interest, 4 500 lakes, over
19 700 rivers, coniferous and mixed forests that cover more than half
of the region, deposits of 18 mineral water types and of medicinal
muds.
Historical: 12 old towns and communities have the status of historical
ones, 862 cultural heritage sites are protected by the government, 248
of them being of the national signifcance.

Spa and health resorts: 17, specializing in the treatment of diseases
of the digestive system, respiratory organs, the locomotor apparatus,

Museums: 40, the unique ones being the Alexander Grin Museum in
Kirov (the only museum dedicated to the great writer in Russia), the
memorial house of Victor and Apollinary Vasnetsov in Ryabovo,
Zuyevka district, the house-museum of Ivan Konev in the
Podosinovets district, the Vyatka Regional Paleontological Museum
and the Peasantry History Museum in the Kotelnich district.
Folk arts and crafts: over 10, the indigenous ones being the
Dymkovo clay toys and burl handicrafts.

The region’s cultural and historical heritage includes:

philharmonic society for children, a concert hall of the
organ and chamber music, and a circus;
• a variety of folk arts and crafts: the Dymkovo clay toy, the Vyatka bobbin laces, handicraft of
root burls and the birch bark, the Vyatka matryoshka, wood carving, inlay and painting, plaiting of
wicker, birch bark, pine roots, straw, bast, reed mace and other plant materials; pottery, weaving,
garments of linen cloth with embroidery, of leather and fur, artistic smithery and casting;
• deposits of fossil remains of prehistoric animals belonging to the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic
periods, the world’s largest location of pareiasaurs;
The history of the Vyatka land is inseparable from the life and work of the famous art masters and
devotees of culture, such as the writers Alexander Hertzen, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedring, Vladimir
Korolenko, Alexander Grin, the architect Alexander Vitberg, the classics of the Russian painting Ivan
Shishkin, Victor and Appolinary Vasnetsov, the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky, and the great opera
singer Fyodor Shalyapin.
