Civil Helicopter Market Forecast 2014-2024:
Commercial Prospects for Top Rotorcraft Companies
8. Expert Opinion
Robinson Helicopter Company is among the world’s leading manufacturers of civil helicopters,
producing large numbers of low-cost light helicopters. Its product line includes the two-seat R22
and four-seat R44, which are both light piston-engine helicopters. These were joined in recent
years by the five-seat R66, the company’s entry into the turbine helicopter market.
The following interview was conducted in April 2014. The interviewee from Robinson Helicopter
Company, Mr Kurt Robinson, has been the President of the company since 2010, after the
retirement of Frank Robinson, his father, who founded the company in 1973. Mr Robinson holds a
commercial helicopter pilot licence and has worked in the Robinson Helicopter Company for more
than 30 years.
Visiongain would like to thank Mr Kurt Robinson and Robinson Helicopter Company for their
cooperation and contribution.
8.1 Robinson Helicopter’s Products
Visiongain: Could you please detail your company’s business and the type of services or products
that you provide?
Mr Kurt Robinson: We currently have three helicopters that we are producing; the R22 two-seater
helicopter, the R44, of which there are 2 versions; the Raven I carburetted with a O-540 Lycoming
engine, and the fuel-injected version, which is the Raven II and finally we have the R66, which is a
five-seater turbine helicopter with a baggage compartment and powered by Rolls-Royce 300
engine.
8.2 Are Helicopter Sales Recovering?
Visiongain: How would you describe the general outlook for the civil helicopter market in the past
and in the future?
Mr Kurt Robinson: Obviously, it was going excessively well between 2006 and 2008. However,
the great recession hit, and I think the whole market froze up. It has been thawing up since then,
and has done really well in the last two years, in which we have produced approximately 500
