2. The importance of water for life on Earth
• Often it is not given proper value to water, but without it, human life
would not be possible.
• Although it seems that there is a lot of water on our planet only 3% is
fresh water.
• So, knowing that the world population is 7 billion people and it will
continue to grow, it is important that the man use rationally and cleverly
the water so that future generations may also enjoy this precious
resource.

4. Water scarcity
Currently 18% of the
world population doesn't
have access to minimum
acceptable amount of
potable water
(Source: ONU)

•water crisis
•1 in each 6 people don’t have
access to potable water
•each year 2 million people die
(diseases)
5. Water scarcity
In 2025 2/3 of the world population (5,5 billion people) won’t have
access to potable water if nothing is done to avoid water scarcity.
In 2050 only 1/4 of the world population will have water access to
satisfy (fulfill) their basic needs

8. Bad utilization of water
• 60 liters in each 100 liters of water are used incorrectly
• 25 from the 27 big lakes from China are polluted because of industrial
waste, domestic sewage and fertilizers
• Daily it is estimated that are wasted, in the US alone, 26.5 billion liters of
potable water by leaking pipes.

9. Use of water in agriculture
9
• Over the past decades the trend in agricultural water use has increased
due to the growing use of water for irrigation. However, during the recent
years in various countries growth rate has slowed down.
• Although the water used in agriculture does not require the same quality
standards as the human consumption, the huge amounts required for
species or to increase revenues and other crops, has led to the need to
apply the most effective methods in use.
• As enhancing food production water it is also imperative on cattle
breeding and treatment of various forms of agriculture and poultry
farming.
10. Use of water in industry
10
• Industry and agriculture, together are responsible for over 80% of water
consumption. If a house with four residents needs water just imagine a
company that produces on a large scale and still need to keep the
consumption of each employee.
• The use of water in industrial processes is made from the incorporation of
the feature in the products to cleaning supplies, equipment and facilities,
as well as use in cooling systems and steam generation.
12. How to save water?
There are numerous measures which, if taken, will reduce a lot water
consumption; among the main we include:
• conserve water avoiding waste;
• basic sanitation that is, treatment of domestic wastewater;
• treatment of industrial polluting liquids so they can be reused;
• irrigation projects avoiding reckless consumption;
• protection of the potential of regions of the river sources.

13. Marateca Dam
• Designed to provide drinking water to the city of Castelo Branco and some
parishes of the district, came to become the natural 'home' to many species
of animal and plant kingdom who found here a safe place to ensure their
survival. It also became a place of recreation and leisure for the population.
