- We’re here to tell you about everything MAP does – but we all know the main reason you’re here is because you want to know about the MAP15 SA. Structure of tonight - MAP Events which are accessible to anyone in the public followed by the MAP Startup Accelerator and all the other stuff we do.
- I’d like to start off with one of the things that drives us – the vision behind MAP is to enhance the culture of entrepreneurship. We’ve realised that entrepreneurship is thriving – there are startups everywhere. They’re in the University of Melbourne, in our city and all over Australia. But the one thing that we’re extremely proud of is that the University of Melbourne is the benchmark uni when it comes to entrepreneurial support. And on a global scale, the UBI Index has ranked us #13 in the world as one of the top global university business incubators.
- You’re all here tonight to find out what MAP has to offer and you’re probably wondering why you should get involved? The reason is the people. We have a phenomenal range of people involved with MAP – specifically, our AB, Mentor List but also the MAP Team which is made up of experienced entrepreneurs, rhode scholars, academics and people who are ruthlessly persistent in getting the job done. Between the MAP AB + Mentors, MAP is incredibly well connected and the access to this range of expertise will help you drive your startup. These people have helped MAP startups raise over 7.8 million in funding ….. Etc etc Brief history about members of the AB Team Martin -Lochard -Env management solutions for airports -85% of global market share before he sold it Paul -Listed in 2001 -Sold to a South African company last Oakton year -He’s now looking for his next investment Sarah -IB experience having worked with GS -Incredibly well connected to the top end of town -Raise funding/get in with corporates -Her experience is nothing short of outstanding Tony -Has anyone here heard of Google Docs? -Tony started a company w/ provided the presentation software as a basis for GD and sold it to Google a couple of years before joining Starfish Ventures. These are the ppl you’ll get support from once you get involved. The reason we want to share with you these stories – emphasies the quality of the ppl that surround this program – quality of people you will have access to if you get into MAP SA. Having said that – we want all of you to apply – don’t feel like you’re too early. If we know your startup – we have a good understanding of your startups. Even if you don’t get in – plenty of opportunities – but you need to apply – leave the call of whether you are too inexperienced/early-stage
- -Events – open to everyone and anyone who is interested in entrepreneurship -SA – accessible on an application basis
- Back in 2012, MAP was just a SA. We’ve now made that work Also aware that there were a lot of people from a range of disciplines – who want to get into the SA but earlier in the path – funnel of activities to help you get from no experience to – doesn’t matter if you’re a first time entrep with no experience or someone who has started businesses and sold them – MAP has a range of programs that will help everybody. So we introduced PFs, MCs, Velocity Series into the pipeline.
- -Most things start with a little bit of inspiration. -PFs are designed to spark that inspiration by inviting some of the brightest minds in Australia and overseas to come down and share their insights to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs. -We also have a lot of wine, beer and canapés at the end of the night – which is always a plus! -Our next Public Forum is on Tuesday 19 May. Ed Husic is an anomaly – politician who actually gets it. -He’s a big fan of MAP and he’s very keen to drive Australia’s innovation in the digital economy. -For anyone who’s interested – we’ve published registrations on our website. They’re usually the quickest to sell out so I would suggest getting your tickets early.
- PFs are great because you get to hear some really awesome stories. But when it comes to running your own business, you need practical advice and the MCs do that. We have a range of speakers who will share their insights about how to run a startup – this includes R&D incentives, legal essentials, capital raising, taking your startup abroad etc. Upcoming: Kickstarter Campaign. We’re very lucky to have Djordje who is the co founder of Swatchmate as a guest speaker – and his team successfully raised over $150k across Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
- One of the issues we identified – sometimes hard to meet like-minded individuals who have complementary skill sets. The Velocity Series is a perfect medium for you to meet people, build a great team and get an idea off the ground.
- These are our portfolio of startups - I won’t go over in detail – but if you’re interested in finding out more – check our w/site 121cast – personalised radio station – signed deals with Southern Cross Austerio (one of the largest radio networks in Australia) Cortera – implantable med devices to treat people with neurological conditions - was one of the teams to receive funding under DARPA from President Obama’s Brain Initiative. QC – Aims to transform the health industry by shifting the focus from reactive healthcare to preventative healthcare - secured funding from Janssen end of program last year
- Now, I’m excited to say that we’ve invited 2 of these startups here tonight (both xLabs and Brosa) to share a bit of their stories with you. First up we have xLabs. Everyone please welcome Joe Hanna, the CEO of xLabs.
- <$20k funding, office space, mentoring, Sydney, SV> There are some structural changes to how it all works but we’ll all go in detail for those in the SA Workshop.
- If you are a student, staff or alumni within 5 years of these participating faculties, you are eligible to apply for MAP. We don’t want to cut people out but these are the faculties that currently support us Good news is if you have successfully completed a subject in any of these faculties – you are also eligible. If you have any questions around eligibility – drop us a line and we’ll be able to help you out.
- Comes down to having at least 1 of these 3 things Team -Do you have a proven track record of getting a project/startup off the ground? -Demonstrated if you can start a business Tech -You have novel technology -Whether it’s patentable or cutting edge Traction -Most of the people have been accepted into the MAP SA given their traction -We want to see the progress you’ve made with your startup (initial prototype, product trials, spoken to users, paying customers, or if you’re earning revenue) -Traction can be diff, but what it means is that you have demonstrated that you have the capacity to execute upon your vision. If you are applying for MAP this year, you will have to meet at least one of these criteria Having said that – we want all of you to apply – don’t not apply because feel like you’re too early or inexperienced. Leave the call of whether you’re too early stage to us. Even if you don’t get in – plenty of avenues to get involved – if you’ve applied and progressed to the interviews, we would’ve spent some time getting to know your business – you now have your foot in the door – there are plenty of ways we can still support you.
- There are 4 stages to the Selection Process For those who want to know how they can put their best foot forward in the application process, we’ll be hosting an application workshop on …. In saying that, I’d like to invite the 2nd MAP startup of the night, Brosa to share with you their MAP Story and also how they managed to ace the selection process.
- Before we proceed, I’d like to address a few of the questions that are most commonly asked: What happens during the 6 months of the MAP Startup Accelerator? -The 6 months are intensive. -You will work out of the MAP workspace in Lab-14 with all the other teams that make it through -You will be testing. You’ll be speaking to a whole bunch of customers. You will be building. You may even have to pivot your idea. This is the time that you execute. -We will connect you with mentors that are domain experts in your particular field and we’ll help you form your own advisory boards -Socially, you’ll be invited to dinners with our mentors and other alumni -You will be expected to give us a progress update every week and you will also be pitching to us and all the other teams every week. -You will fly with us to Sydney and Silicon Valley. Does each founder go full-time? At least one founder is expected to go full-time during the program Team member ski Skill set across the board to be able to execute Does MAP have an investment mandate? No. We welcome businesses from any industry. Does MAP take equity in the startup? Not at the moment. Do I need to prepare a business plan? We’re more interested in a pitch. No we will not read your business plan. Business plans add value to large corporations but mean very little in the case of an early-stage startup. Most of the time, startups are facing unknown customer needs or an unknown feature set. You’ll have to test a lot assumptions and most of the time you’ll have to pivot. Do not prepare a business plan for your application.
