2. WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
Generally recognised as a cultural capital, the popular holiday destination of
Kandy is the second largest city of Sri Lanka, in South Asia.
The city itself is a great place to visit at any time of year and the clarity of air
makes a refreshing change from the heat of the coastal areas.
For some impressive views while you eat, Slightly Chilled Lounge is partially open
to the air, making the view of the birds during happy hour and the view of the fruit
bats overhead at dusk all the more enjoyable.
The food choices in Kandy are vast and the Kandy Muslim Hotel offers what
many feel are the best samosas in the city. When visiting this restaurant, be sure
to follow tradition by eating your meal with your right hand.
3. ATTRACTIONS
We’ve selected our top 5 things to see and do in Kandy:
Kandy Esala Perahera: In addition to its history, culture and beautiful landscape, the city draws visitors in with its
variety of attractions like the lavish Kandy Esala Perahera, otherwise known as the festival of the tooth of Lord Buddha.
Temple of the Sacred Tooth: Home to Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha – the Temple
of the Sacred Tooth should be on every itinerary. Although it is heavily guarded, devotees and tourists can gaze upon
the gold casket housing the relic before visiting the many other temples and museums within the complex.
Pancha Karma: Indulge in pure relaxation by visiting Pancha Karma, the Ayurvedic spa at the Amaya Hill resort.
Located just outside the city, it offers an array of signature treatments that are pure bliss.
Kandy Lake: Close to the main temples, this artificial lake provides a calm place for visitors to walk around and take in
some of the local sights. The best way to explore the waterway is by a boat ride.
Knuckles Range: If you prefer more active excursions, one of the many trekking expeditions to Knuckles Range will be
for you. Overnight stays, rafting trips, and mountain-biking can all be arranged.
4. WEATHER
The city has two distinct seasons – monsoon and dry – and is coldest in January, and
hottest in July. The humidity is quite high at an average of between 70% and 79%.
Lasting from May through to August, monsoon season brings temperatures ranging
from 25°C to 29°C. Rainfall is highest during the season but beyond that the weather
can be unpredictable.
Between September and November, the city is in its inter-monsoonal period. This is
characterised by high humidity, light rain, and temperatures that hover from 24°C to
29°C.
Temperatures stay between 22°C and 30°C during the dry season, which lasts from
December until April. Rainfall is rare and the climate remains very hot and humid.
5. CLOTHING
For a comfortable visit, lightweight, cool clothing should be worn
throughout the year. Sunglasses, sun cream and a protective hat are
also advised to protect you from the bright sun.
Visitors heading to Kandy during wet season will need suitable
waterproof clothing as the heavy downfalls could render an umbrella
useless.
6. IDEAL FOR…?
The beautiful temples and rich cultural heritage make Kandy an
exciting destination for tourists who want to explore what makes
Sri Lanka unique.
The stunning sunsets and lush green hills ensure couples can
find the romantic retreat to suit them.
Between December and April are the best months to visit,
although the city remains pleasantly hot throughout the year.
7. WHAT NOW?
Culture seekers and travellers looking to learn about diverse cultures will enjoy
how east meets west in Istanbul. Families with older children would perhaps
appreciate the city break and groups of friends are sure to enjoy the nightlife
atmosphere.
