What is Women&Technologies®? The international Women&Technologies® (2008-2015) conference offers a view of the relationship between women and technology not as a gender issue, but as a tool to identify and promote excellence in research, technological development and innovation in relation to the issues of greatest interest for the Expo 2015. Founder and General Chairperson of the conference is Gianna Martinengo, President of Didael S.r.l.,who has dedicated her professional career as a researcher and entrepreneur to the relationship between technologies and innovation. www.giannamartinengo.it © 2010 – All rightsreserved 8. women and technologies: not only consumers, but also producersWomen&Technologies®: aims © 2010 – Allrightsreserved 9. Women&Technologies®: focus “We need to design infrastructures that are able to include people, with all their social and collaborative dimensions, in the production cycle. This is why technological research requires integrating, as prescribed by what is known as a “holistic approach”, the contributions of diverse disciplines; not only logic and mathematics, but also psychology, the social sciences, cognitive science, education, anthropology and literature.” - Gianna Martinengo, interviewed at the press conference launching Women&Technologies 2008 © 2010 – Allrightsreserved 11. Round table -WHO: Generation 2015 Their longstanding marginalisation from technoscientific mainstreaming have developed in women a distinguished ability to explore less-traveled spots of scientific investigation. Because in many areas it is precisely the work on potentially rich but neglected fields that generates productive results, women are gaining self-confidence in applying technoscientific solutions to urgent issues. It is clear to us that we have to start from the young generations, broadening the supply of educational technoscientific programs and aligning them to the needs of world sustainability and diversity. Round table –The cross-disciplinary quality of technologies Until a few years ago, there was a widespread belief that hyper-specialisation in a single, very specific sector would be the future not only of research, but of high-tech business: those who aimed for “cross-fertilization” appeared hardly credible in the eyes of the “experts”. Today, we realise that cross-disciplinarity is not only a great treasure, but one that opens up entirely new horizons and opportunities. One effect of this cross-disciplinarity is the emergence of a very particular figure: the “broker” who can understand the potential of experts from different worlds (ICT and non-ICT).. Round table –Not just technology but persons Not just technology, but persons. Who needs whom? We often talk about “new technologies” and never about “old” ones. But today, they are all technologies, so the question becomes: how can we adopt-absorb-guide technologies instead of being guided by them? They key consideration is whether technologies enable you to do the same things with better results, or if they allow you to do other things, to resolve problems differently. The winning idea is that of co-adaptation: technologies are modified by their application, and activities are modified by technologies. Women and ICT in Europe A picture of the situation of European women, how many are, where they are and how women act and innovative researchers in the ICT world. Examples of women who participate in the processes of innovation for technology transfer. What are the initiatives, the framework and operations of the European Commission for projects that affect women and their relationship with technology. But, above all, a question directed to young adult women. There is much talk of a real or perceived difficulty of women to interact with the high-tech, almost as if there were a "doomed" because of characteristics of gender. Is there really such a difficult genre or is it a stereotype overcome and overcome? Is there a distance between themselves and the world "high" ICT? Analyzing the situation and the situations in different European countries will try to answer and draw a real situation, which lies outside the boundaries. Art and affectivecomputing / Interaction and Dialogue in web communications of the future The domain of art developed considerably thanks to digital technologies. At the same time within the scenario of social computing, recognition and the creation of emotion in people and property in avatar (Affective Computing) has become one of the key to the success of several initiatives. The market for games, serious or not, is growing every year to an unprecedented level. In trade, for example, analysis of past human behavior serves to make adaptive systems, higher performance and then optimize the economic performance. Online advertising can be an effect of stimulating emotions. At the same time computational models of emotions are produced and implemented for other socially important purposes, like education, inclusion, health care. As an example of computer-based biology, today are developed humanoid robots that provide emotional behaviors inspired man, considered useful for different purposes. Not only is the Web 2.0 allows people to produce as well as consume information, but the shift from product-centric architectures to service-oriented requires the integration of technology and people within the infrastructure.Services are developed independently of whether they have been discovered, activities, paid, offered, created, produced, consumed, made, negotiated, validated, paid ... by machines or by people. The transition requires additional properties typical of the social life of people, like the interaction, dialogue, reputation and the like. Theories like those of speech acts, historically developed from the Philosophy of Language, or deontic logic, rules and norms of law and jurisprudence, they become eligible for advanced ICT solutions. Coordinator: FiorelloCortiana © 2010 – Allrightsreserved 53. Innovation in businesses and institutions Of course, ICT can help women "as consumers of services" as part of their professional activity, employment opportunities, including distance and videoconferencing for virtual meetings can modify the traditional situation of "lack of time" women's overloaded commitments. However this is not the only perspective that we wish to propose with innovation related to ICT. Digital technologies may pave the way for entirely new ways to produce and deliver services, or they can also promote the identification of new products and new services, such as digital signature, e-mail certificates, electronic invoicing, e -procurement, storage and replacement of document management. Women are able to bring a specific contribution to innovation in terms of creativity is the capacity to adapt to new patterns of production and organization: policies of diversity in business can help to enhance this contribution and make it a success factor.
