Your solution is not my (fucking) problem
Not Everything With A Plug Is Technology
Things that may be dismissed as fake technologies (Facebook,
Amazon) often resolve very challenging technological problems.
Amazon helped develop intelligent customer
recommendations and logistical efficiencies that allow you
to order almost anything, anytime, and get it the next day
Web companies that fail are the
companies that fail to exploit the

true power of the medium
Are There Any Real
Technologies Left?
The best companies create their own sectors
- They are not popular
- They are difficult to assess
- They have technology risk (but not insurmountable)
- If they succeed, their will be extraordinarily valuable
The best founders want to radically
change the world for the better.
So where to start?
The way to get startup ideas is not
to try to think of startup ideas. It's
to look for problems, preferably
problems you have yourself.
First and for all...
Let’s kill the Hollywood effect together
Organic Startup Ideas:
Advantages
1. It ensures the problem exists
2. You avoid "made-up"
or "sitcom" startup ideas
3 - If you’re honest with yourself,
you know if you’re the right person
But there is an opportunity
at anthropology
You can either build something
a large number of people want
a small amount, or something
a small number of people
want a large amount (niche).
Choose the latter.
Who wants this so much that they'll use it even when it's a
crappy version one made by a two-person startup they've never
heard of? If you can't answer that, the idea is probably bad
But How do you tell whether something is the germ
of a giant company, or just a niche product?
Answer: it’s rarely obvious
The Best Ideas

“It’s a terrible idea”

*

"It’s a great idea!”
A good strategy: Live in the future,
then build what's missing.
The verb you want to be using is
not "think up" but "notice."
Pay particular attention to
things that bother you.
Worrying that you're late is one
of the signs of a good idea.
Turn off the unsexy filter and

the schlep (difficult) filter
Look in areas where you
have some expertise
One good trick is to ask yourself whether in your
previous job you ever found yourself saying "Why
doesn't someone make x? If someone made x
we'd buy it in a second."
You know there's demand, and people don't say
that about things that are impossible to build.
BUT "Entrepreneurship" is
something you learn best by doing it.
The two pillars of entrepreneurship:
ignorance and incompetence, so RELAX
Don't try to start Twitter. Those ideas are so rare
that you can't find them by looking for them.
Ultimately, your SOLUTION
is to SOLVE MY PROBLEM
Connect with your audience emotionally around
the problem, and then -- and ONLY then -- offer
your solution as the remedy to that problem
You are Welcome to Join the Adventure
