2. Pakistan’s Case Studies
There is no easy fix or short term plan which
will ensure growth in Pakistan. But the
following facts need noting:
Population Growth: Approx180 Million1.551% (Two thirds under the age of 25 years,2012 est.)
Consumer Appetite: (annual % growth) in Pakistan was last reported at 7.02 in 2011
Human Capital: The country's social sector traditionally underperforms even during periods of
strong macroeconomic growth. This fundamental weakness has continued to prevent
improvements into blue and white collar labour
Natural Resources: Natural gas consumption, real capital, labour and real exports are positively
affecting the economic growth in Pakistan.

3. Telecoms & Micro Finance
• Easy Paisa mobile SMS pilot
In 2009, Telenor Pakistan partnered with Tameer Micro Finance Bank to introduce
branchless banking for the first time in Pakistan. Dfid invested £12million in this
project. Easypaisa Completed 83 Million Transactions Worth Rs. 178 Billion to its
Agents, product line, financial strength, Reaching Rural areas.

• Easy Paisa: Agri- market links
The Business Environment Strategy 2012 kicked off with the Agriculture Commodity
Trade (ACT) signing ceremony that took place between Telenor Pakistan and the

4. Dairy Farming
• Apna Arsh Pakistan
Apna Arsh Pakistan and Center for Sustainable Development (AAP-CSDA), partnered to create a citizen sector
organization partnership, with an emphasis on grassroots to policy level activities and advocacy are proud to bring
to Pakistan the pioneering AgriBusiness Development Forum (ABDF). This Forum was held at LUMS on the 31st
of January 2012 and was organized with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN as

• Invest 2 Innovate
So far, i2i will be working with EcoEnergy Finance, a non-profit that provides clean energy solutions to the rural poor in
Pakistan, and Milk-Op, which is a for-profit social enterprise that provides income generation opportunities for
small-scale dairy farmers and aims to improve the dairy cold chain in Pakistan.

• Acumen Fund
Jassar Farms is a dairy and breed improvement farm working to increase the milk yields of cows in Pakistan. On
average it takes five Pakistani cows to produce as much milk as one cow in other countries. However, most
smallholder farmers in Pakistan cannot afford the imported, high-quality bull semen that would improve their
breeds. Jassar Farms aims to produce affordable, high-quality bull semen doses that could help more than
250,000 farmers double their milk yields

5. Health Innovation
• Mobile health clinics
RMF- Sindh Health Initiative began its operation in January 2011 by first networking extensively with the local health
authorities and registering with the district health cluster coordinated by WHO and UNOCHA. Out of the four
Tehsils in District Dadu, Taluka Johi was selected since it was the hardest hit by the floods due to its location
between two major water sources

The Awareness programme includes Topical issues relating to Prenatal / Antenatal period, Labour and Post Natal

• Up-skilling ‘Dais’ alongside Lady health workers
Trained birth attendants at delivery are important for preventing both maternal and newborn deaths. In South Asia, it is
prevalent, where many women still deliver at home and without the assistance of trained birth attendants. This
study aims to explore the perspectives of community members and health workers about the use of delivery care

Policy makers have recognized that for any significant improvement, the focus must be on health systems as a whole.
Particular diseases and epidemics are simply symptoms of a larger problem, namely the affliction of the whole

6. Renewable Energy
• Rural Hydra Projects:
Three brothers working in Pakistan’s remote Chitral communities are helping provide green electricity for 45,000
homes. Their micro hydro-electricity projects, 70 to date, include manufacturing and installation, giving Pakistani
families clean and reliable power. So far they have helped supply 10 MW of clean greenhouse gas-free power in
two years, working closely with the Clean Development Mechanism, a United Nations tool to help mitigate climate
change. The projects are in “far flung areas” says Rahim Diyar , the managing director of Hydrolink. Rahim is only
23-years-old, and armed with an MBA has enlisted his engineering brother Fazli Rabbi to help realize the dream
of creating sustainable power for Pakistan, from within. A third brother Fazli Khaliq is the CEO.

• Wind Power (Sindh)
Pakistan's first ever 50MW wind power project wind power project was inaugurated in December 2012, in Jhampir near
Thatta. Forty-five wind power projects of around 3,200MW capacity are under process and the Fauji Fertiliser
Company will be adding 10MW solar generation to its 50MW wind project, making this a hybrid plant.
