- Before you can truly experience art you must first learn to PERCEIVE. This means to recognize, discern, envision, or understand. "Mirrors are possibly the most important things in life. What you see in the mirror may not be the same thing as someone else sees. It’s all a matter of perception - not what’s actually there, but what you see as being there."- Ryan Stokes Perception is to SEE what the art is communicating.
- 5 FUNCTIONS or PURPOSES of Art Personal: Expresses personal feelings Social: Conveys a sense of family, community, or civilization (Cultural) Physical: functional art like architecture, pottery, jewelry, etc. Spiritual: supports the religious or spiritual beliefs of a person or culture Educational: passes on historical facts or teaches about cultures
- 3 Components of a Work of Art Subject: The image viewers can easily identify in a work of art. Composition: How the work is organized; the way the principles of art are used to organize the elements of art. Content: The message the work communicates
- Pause to give a brief overview of the Elements & Principles of Design (located on the wall above the cabinets on the hall side of the classroom)
- 4 Steps to Critique a Work of Art Describe: What do you see? What is the subject? DESCRIBE the piece in detail. Analyze: How is the work organized in relation to the ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES of design? Interpret: What do you think the artist is communicating? What is the meaning? Judge: Is the work successful? Be objective.
