2. Suleiman's Declaration Suleiman, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Grandson of Mehmet the Great, was looking to make a name for himself. Following tradition, as new emperor, Suleiman was obliged to conquer new lands. His letter to Philip de L'Isle Adam, Grand Master of Rhodes, was the addressee of his letter.
3. In the early 1500's, the battle between Christendom and Islam was growing. Rhodes in the Dodecanese island group, was an isolated Christian bastion held by the Knights of Saint John. For Suleiman, this was a sore, a menace that cramped his need to control more of the Aegean Sea. Suleiman and his men made landfall on June 24. The knights, loyal to the pope, were revered for their fighting ability. Yet they could not withstand the huge Ottoman fleet. On December 20th, the Knights were succomned, and L'Isl Adam signed a treaty of defeat. Suleiman had made his mark.
