This document summarizes the responsibilities of the Membership Chair for Mortar Board National Honor Society. The Membership Chair is responsible for organizing the application process, collecting applications, setting up online voting, organizing tapping and initiation ceremonies, and submitting forms to the national office. They must be highly organized and set S.M.A.R.T. goals to stay on track. Delegating tasks to a membership committee helps the Chair accomplish smaller tasks. The Chair uses a directive leadership style to ensure strict processes are followed accurately.
2. What is Mortar Board? National Honor Society for college seniors Requires a minimum 3.5 GPA and 78 hours Focuses on Scholarship, Leadership, and Service We host the Fall blood drive and the Spelling Bee in the Spring Dr. Sronce is the chapter advisor!
3. What is the Membership Chair responsible for? EVERYTHING! !! But really… Setting up the application process, finding who is eligible. Collecting applications Setting up Survey Monkey Organizing Voting Organizing Tapping Organizing Initiation Submitting forms to the national office Just to name a few….
4. Membership Chair of Mortar Board National Honor Society This is the 2010-2012 class of Mortar Board at Drury. If you see them/us/me. Tell us we’re cool!
5. S.M.A.R.T. Goals The Theory “A goal setting theory that makes every goal Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely.” In Practice You had to be VERY organized for this position. Setting goals helped me through the process… I knew what I needed to accomplish EVERY DAY! To arrange the applications for Survey Monkey by February 26, 2011 for members to make their initial votes. Members will sent the voting link by February 28, 2011 and their answers must be submitted by March 4, 2011. The final voting process will be held March 6, 2011.
6. Delegation In Theory “The assignment of direct authority and responsibility to a subordinate to complete tasks for which the manager is normally responsible” In Practice It really helped… the membership committee actually reminded me to do things! Helped me get smaller things accomplished. Committee members were responsible for ordering flowers, stoles, and shirts.
7. National Convention All the smart people come together to learn how to be a leader! This is Sam, Me, and Julia. (She’s from Drury too.)
8. Path Goal Theory In Theory “Leaders can increase subordinate satisfaction and performance by clarifying and clearing he paths to goals by increasing the number and kinds of rewards available for goal attainment” Directive leadership: “letting employees know precisely what is expected of them” In Practice Used a directive style of leadership… I didn’t need to make current members feel good about themselves. Because it is a very strict process, things needed to get done certain ways, being direct and accurate was the easiest way.
9. Leadership Behavior - Initiating In Theory “The behaviors they perform or the actions they take to influence others to achieve group or organizational goals.” “The degree to which a leader structures the roles of followers by setting goals, giving directions, setting deadlines, and assigning tasks.” In Practice I used the initiating structure because it was easier to do things step by step. By setting goals, I knew when things needed to be accomplished. I was only mean when people didn’t do what I told them!
10. The REAL guy from Hitch. Remember the movie Hitch with Will Smith??? Yeah… This is the guy the movie/his character is based on. He‘s actually allergic to shell fish. And not as attractive as Will Smith. He was pretty funny and a good speaker.
