This document compares non-AIDS necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis to AIDS-associated necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis. Non-AIDS type occurs after repeated gum infections and causes painful red gums, bleeding, and bad breath. It can also cause fever and swollen glands. AIDS-associated type affects up to 5% of people and results in large areas of soft tissue death exposing bone, with bone fragments sometimes moving to other areas of the mouth. Bone loss is more rapid in HIV-positive patients and there are greater numbers of opportunistic infections.
