collected. This process is called cellaring and is
very popular all over the globe with some bottles
collecting large sums of money.
Wine as a food
 Wine has been presented or accompanied
with food for hundreds of years.
 Many times wine is presented as a food for
cultural reasons and also as a religious
sacrament.
 Wine pairing is considered an art form by
many, contrasting flavours and textures to
complement food and enhance its flavour.
 Wine is used Very frequently In cooking
recipe's.
Wine as a collectors item
 Although most people buy wine to drink
some collect wines they deem special.
 This applies for wine that is desirable to
buyers e.g. last of that particular vintage,
one of a certain amount made e.g. 1 of
100
 and wine of cultural significance or
special meaning to a person/persons.
Challenges of collecting
 Often hard to keep a bottle in ideal
conditions (Temprature ,
sunlight,secureness ).
 Most collectors Have to purchase a cellar

Wine for cellaring
 Wine has been kept in cellars for over
hundreds of years
 It is more common to cellar a wine to
collect than to drink.(at a later date)
 Some cellared wines can cost $500 +
 Some wines age in the bottle and are
best to cellar before consuming however
some wines especially young wines can
deteriorate in the bottle.
The cellar
Cellaring/collecting
 Most Wine collected and stored in cellers
improve in price with age. These fine
wines or desireable wines can fetch
incredable sums of money at auction.
 This type of cellaring /collecting is
considered an investment.
 A bottle of Lafite-Rothschild sold for
an average amount of 490 USD, that
same bottle six years later sold for 2’586 USD
Wine trade ( past )
 Wine has been traded For many years both as
a food resource and as a collectors item.
 The military used wine to motivate troops in
the heat of battle
 Wine was traded for common commodity's
e.g. bread fruit etc.
 wine in the past was common place for
sacrifices and or religious gatherings.
 Shows an escalating trend in wine value .
Wine trade ( present )
 Wine plays a major role in todays market
and is mainly predominant in the food
industry and is extremely common to
accompany food with wine.
 Also collection of wine has grown
worldwide and the market for collection is
growing to meet customer demand.
The future of wine
 As wine plays such a major role in
everyday life and religion it is relatively
safe to say it holds a commanding role in
the future of world markets.
 Wine no doubt will not lose its investible
qualitys but still will retain its importance as
a food.
