What is Behaviorism?....
A theory of learning based upon the idea that all
behaviors are acquired through conditioning.
Conditioning occurs through interaction with the
environment. Behaviorists believe that our
responses to environmental stimuli shapes our
behaviors.
Key people associated with
Behaviorism:
•

•

Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936)

B.F. Skinner (1904-1990)
•

Albert Bandurd (1925-)
Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936)
Famous for behavioral experiments with dogs.

●

Used classic conditioning to teach dogs to
salivate when he rang a bell.(Dogs associated bell
with food=salivate)
●

Behaviorists studied his work as an example of
stimulus response.
●

Won the Nobel Prize in physiology in 1904.

●
B.F. Skinner
(1904-1990)
Conducted experiments
with pigeons through Operant conditioning.

●

Pigeons are rewarded when behaving in desired
manor.
●

Pigeons eventually taught to dance and bowl.

●

Believed that behavior is shaped on
positive/negative reinforcement received.
●
Albert Bandurd (1925 -)
Famous for ideas on Social Cognitive Theory.

●

Believes in watching and mimicking behaviorObservational modeling.
●

Later analyzed personality through:
➢Environment
➢Behavior
➢Psychological process
●
Key points of Behaviorism:
Classic conditioning-natural reflex that occurs in
response to a stimulus.
●Operant conditioning- controlled learning that shapes
behavior through the reinforcement of stimulus-response
patterns.
●Modernism-everything of value is measured solely in
terms of science.
●Observational modeling- watching something and
mimicking the behavior.
●Self efficacy- personal observation about one's
perceived ability to feel, think, and motivate oneself to
learn.
●Imagery-retain information through images in the mind.
●
Teacher Classroom
Implications:
With Technology- Give a
classroom lecture through a
power point presentation and reward a student
when they answer the question correctly.
Without Technology- Demonstrate a science
experiment for the class and have the student
mimic the teachers actions through Observational
modeling of Albert Bandura.
Student classroom
Implications:
With Technology- Student
participates in online activities and are provided
with positive or negative verbal/visual feedback
when the correct/incorrect answer is chosen.
Without Technology- The student mimics the
teacher's demonstration on how to assemble a
tent.
What I think for my teaching...
I feel the example of behaviorism is
natural and an easy theory to follow. Today, I
see classroom teachers following the ideas
behind behaviorism as I will do the same. I
will demonstrate ideas having the students
mimic and use rewards for encouragement.
These are the types of examples that come
to mind when I see myself teaching.
