2. Madagascar, or Republic of Madagascar (older name Malagasy Republic, French: République malgache), is an island nation in the Indian Ocean off the southeastern coast of Africa. The nation comprises the island of Madagascar which, at 587,000 sq km (227,000 sq mi), is classified as the fourth-largest island in the world, as well as numerous smaller peripheral islands, the largest of which include Nosy Be and Nosy Boraha (Île Sainte-Marie). The capital of Madagascar, the city of Antananarivo, is located in the highlands, a plateau region in the center of the island. A nature-lover’s paradise, this sparsely-populated land is crisscrossed by no less than six different micro-climates! Madagascar’s highest mountain is Maromokotro, in the Tsaratanana Massif region in the north of the island. Madagascar has been called the "Great Red Island" because of the prominence of red lateritic soils.
