BEHAVIORISMO
("Teóricos do Comportamento")
observáveis" negligenciando as actividades mentais... A aprendizagem é simplesmente definida como a
aquisição de um novo comportamento.
Princípios do Behaviorismo
O organismo aprende a
incondicionada);
- no "condicionamento operante" a "RC é emitida do interior do organismo" (Skinner).
Críticas:
a) Não leva em conta algumas capacidades intelectuais das espécies superiores;
diferentes detectados em bebés que não tinham sido antes reforçados para tal;
poderem "acomodar" as novas experiências...
Princípios do Construtivismo
A Aprendizagem deve pois
a constituem.

mentais do jovem adulto.
(adquirindo representações mentais cada vez mais complexas);
conservar o número e a quantidade.
material do funcionamento intelectual
* O cérebro altera-se com o uso através de toda a vida. A concentração mental e o esfor¡o alteram a
estrutura física do cérebro.
AS MÚLTIPLAS INTELIGÊNCIAS
(Howard Gardner)
é autónomo das outras capacidades humanas;
tem um núcleo base de operações de "processamento de informação";
3. passam);
A pessoa
com este estilo de aprendizagem tem facilidade em recordar nomes, lugares, datas e coisas semelhantes;
indutivo e dedutivo, para o uso de números e resolução de problemas matemáticos e lógicos;
As
preferem "estar sós" e pouco dadas a convívios.
(Gardner - Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences)
e sentindo;
Os Activos - Fazem imediatamente qualquer coisa com a informação que recolheram da experiência;
(McCarthy - Teaching to Learning Styles with Right/Left Mode Techniques)
a) os diferentes hemisférios cerebrais controlam diferentes "modos" de pensar;
Racional Intuitivo
Analítico Sintético
Objectivo Subjectivo
Percebe o pormenor Percebe a forma
(Bernie McCarthy - Teaching to Learning Styles with Right/Left Mode Techniques)
A APRENDIZAGEM CONSCIENTE
involuntários;
Segundo Estádio: Aprendizagem das relações estímulos-respostas musculares ou voluntárias;
Terceiro Estádio: Aprendizagem de cadeias mentais ou verbais;
várias respostas em função de um estímulo dado;
vários estímulos;
( As ciências cognitivas ; pp.135)
O MODELO DE APRENDIZAGEM BASEADO EM REGRAS
( Segundo Daniel Dubois)
Ideias principais:
assimilam;
representações;
inculcada sob a forma de regras que orientam, guiam ou canalizam o processo de aprendizagem;
auto-aprendizagem.

acquisition e learning. Desconsiderando fatores

Introduction
Stephen Krashen (University of Southern California) is an expert in the field of linguistics, specializing in
theories of language acquisition and development. Much of his recent research has involved the study of
non-English and bilingual language acquisition. During the past 20 years, he has published well over 100
books and articles and has been invited to deliver over 300 lectures at universities throughout the United
States and Canada.
This is a brief description of Krashen's widely known and well accepted theory of second language
acquisition, which has had a large impact in all areas of second language research and teaching since the
1980s.
Description of Krashen's Theory of Second Language Acquisition
Krashen's theory of second language acquisition consists of five main hypotheses:
• the Acquisition-Learning hypothesis,
• the Monitor hypothesis,
• the Natural Order hypothesis,
• the Input hypothesis,
• and the Affective Filter hypothesis.

According to Krashen there are two

perfectionists are over-users. Lack of self-
confidence is frequently related to the
over-use of the 'monitor'.
The Natural Order hypothesis is based on research findings (Dulay & Burt, 1974; Fathman, 1975; Makino,
1980 cited in Krashen, 1987) which suggested that the acquisition of grammatical structures follows a
'natural order' which is predictable. For a given language, some grammatical structures tend to be acquired
early while others late. This order seemed to be independent of the learners' age, L1 background, conditions
of exposure, and although the agreement between individual acquirers was not always 100% in the studies,
there were statistically significant similarities that reinforced the existence of a Natural Order of language
acquisition. Krashen however points out that the implication of the natural order hypothesis is not that a
language program syllabus should be based on the order found in the studies. In fact, he rejects grammatical
sequencing when the goal is language acquisition.
The Input hypothesis is Krashen's attempt to explain how the learner acquires a second language. In other
words, this hypothesis is Krashen's explanation of how second language acquisition takes place. So, the Input
hypothesis is only concerned with 'acquisition', not 'learning'. According to this hypothesis, the learner
improves and progresses along the 'natural order' when he/she receives second language 'input' that is one
step beyond his/her current stage of linguistic competence. For example, if a learner is at a stage 'i', then
acquisition takes place when he/she is exposed to 'Comprehensible Input' that belongs to level 'i + 1'. Since
not all of the learners can be at the same level of linguistic competence at the same time, Krashen suggests
that natural communicative input is the key to designing a syllabus, ensuring in this way that each learner
will receive some 'i + 1' input that is appropriate for his/her current stage of linguistic competence.
Finally, the fifth hypothesis, the Affective Filter hypothesis, embodies Krashen's view that a number of
'affective variables' play a facilitative, but non-causal, role in second language acquisition. These variables
include: motivation, self-confidence and anxiety. Krashen claims that learners with high motivation, self-
confidence, a good self-image, and a low level of anxiety are better equipped for success in second language
acquisition. Low motivation, low self-esteem, and debilitating anxiety can combine to 'raise' the affective
filter and form a 'mental block' that prevents comprehensible input from being used for acquisition. In other
words, when the filter is 'up' it impedes language acquisition. On the other hand, positive affect is necessary,
but not sufficient on its own, for acquisition to take place.
Approach, versões norte-americana e britânica, respectivamente, do construtivismo
15. O PAPEL DA GRAMÁTICA SEGUNDO KRASHEN

Noam Chomsky, Language and Responsibility
CHOMSKY, Noam. American linguist and political writer born on Dec. 7, 1928, in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania.
Avram Noam Chomsky was introduced to linguistics by his father, a Hebrew scholar who worked with
historical linguistics. Noam studied at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a doctoral degree in linguistics
in 1955, and then he began teaching at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where today he is Institute
Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Philosophy.
To find the principles common to all languages that enable people to speak creatively and freely is Noam
Chomsky's description of his goal as a linguist. Many recent works have stressed that all children go through
the same stages of language development regardless of the language they are learning. In examining this,
Chomsky gave linguistics, the study of the human speech, a new direction.
Knowing a language means being able to produce an infinite number of sentences never spoken before and
to understand sentences never heard before. Chomsky refers to this ability as the "creative aspect" of
language.
His first book, Syntactic Structures, published in 1957, outlines his system of transformational grammar. This
grammar consists of surface structures - the sounds and words in a sentence - and deep structures that contain
the meaning of the sentence. The meaning is converted by a transformation - any of an ordered set of rules -
17. to a surface structure. Chomsky says that children are born with a knowledge of the principles of the
grammatical structure of all languages, and this inborn knowledge explains the success and speed with which
they learn language.
Further, his work implies and he states that linguistics is a branch of psychology, and that an understanding
of the rules of a language throws light on the principles that regulate human thought. Other of his linguistic
publications include:
Aspects of the Theory of Syntax (1965)
Cartesian Linguistics (1966)

Noam Chomsky has been much more than just a brilliant and revolutionary linguist. Chomsky's studies on
political and social issues are strong with intelligent criticism. A long-time political activist, Chomsky is the
author of numerous books and articles on US foreign policy, international affairs, human rights, modern
history, American political life, and peace movements.
This is the other side of Mr. Chomsky's, which very understandably, the American mainstream media tries to

PIAGET
JEAN PIAGET - INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT
Assim, a operação
é que é a essência do conhecimento.
by Wanda Y. Ginn
Jean Piaget was born in Neuchâtel (Switzerland) on August 9, 1896. He died in Geneva on September
16, 1980. He was the oldest child of Arthur Piaget, professor of medieval literature at the University,
and of Rebecca Jackson. At age 11, while he was a pupil at Neuchâtel Latin high school, he wrote a
short notice on an albino sparrow. This short paper is generally considered as the start of a brilliant
scientific career made of over sixty books and several hundred articles.
Piaget has been labeled an interactionist as well as a constructivist. His interest in cognitive development
came from his training in the natural sciences and his interest in epistemology. Piaget was very interested in
knowledge and how children come to know their world. He developed his cognitive theory by actually
observing children (some of whom were his own children). Using a standard question or set of questions as a
starting point, he followed the child's train of thought and allowed the questioning to be flexible. Piaget
believed that children's spontaneous comments provided valuable clues to understanding their thinking. He
was not interested in a right or wrong answer, but rather what forms of logic and reasoning the child used
(Singer, 1978). After many years of observation, Piaget concluded that intellectual development is the result
of the interaction of hereditary and environmental factors. As the child develops and constantly interacts with
the world around him, knowledge is invented and reinvented. His theory of intellectual development is
strongly grounded in the biological sciences. He saw cognitive growth as an extension of biological growth
and as being governed by the same laws and principles (London, 1988). He argued that intellectual
development controlled every other aspect of development - emotional, social, and moral.
STAGES OF INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT
Piaget may be best known for his stages of cognitive development. Piaget discovered that children think and
reason differently at different periods in their lives. He believed that everyone passed through an invariant
sequence of four qualitatively distinct stages. Invariant means that a person cannot skip stages or reorder
them. Although every normal child passes through the stages in exactly the same order, there is some
variability in the ages at which children attain each stage. The four stages are: sensorimotor - birth to 2 years;
preoperational - 2 years to 7 years; concrete operational - 7 years to 11 years; and formal operational
(abstract thinking) - 11 years and up. Each stage has major cognitive tasks which must be accomplished. In
23. the sensorimotor stage, the mental structures are mainly concerned with the mastery of concrete objects. The
mastery of symbols takes place in the preoperational stage. In the concrete stage, children learn mastery of
classes, relations, and numbers and how to reason. The last stage deals with the mastery of thought (Evans,
1973).
HOW CHILDREN LEARN
...we discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural
process which develops spontaneously in the human being. It is not acquired by listening to words, but
in virtue of experiences in which the child acts on his environment. The teacher's task is not to talk,
but to prepare and arrange a series of motives for cultural activity in a special environment made for
the child. (Dr. Maria Montessori)
A central component of Piaget's developmental theory of learning and thinking is that both involve the
participation of the learner. Knowledge is not merely transmitted verbally but must be constructed and
reconstructed by the learner. Piaget asserted that for a child to know and construct knowledge of the world,
the child must act on objects and it is this action which provides knowledge of those objects (Sigel, 1977);
the mind organizes reality and acts upon it. The learner must be active; he is not a vessel to be filled with
facts. Piaget's approach to learning is a readiness approach. Readiness approaches in developmental
psychology emphasize that children cannot learn something until maturation gives them certain prerequisites
(Brainerd, 1978). The ability to learn any cognitive content is always related to their stage of intellectual
development. Children who are at a certain stage cannot be taught the concepts of a higher stage.
Intellectual growth involves three fundamental processes: assimilation, accommodation, and equilibration.
Assimilation involves the incorporation of new events into preexisting cognitive structures. Accommodation
means existing structures change to accommodate to the new information. This dual process, assimilation-
accommodation, enables the child to form schema. Equilibration involves the person striking a balance
between himself and the environment, between assimilation and accomodation. When a child experiences a
new event, disequilibrium sets in until he is able to assimilate and accommodate the new information and
thus attain equilibrium. There are many types of equilibrium between assimilation and accomodation that
vary with the levels of development and the problems to be solved. For Piaget, equilibration is the major
factor in explaining why some children advance more quickly in the development of logical intelligence than
do others (Lavatelli, 40).
IMPLICATIONS FOR EDUCATION
A Piagetian-inspired curricula emphasizes a learner-centered educational philosophy. The teaching methods
which most American school children are familiar with - teacher lectures, demonstrations, audio-visual
presentations, teaching machines, and programmed instruction - do not fit in with Piaget's ideas on the
acquisition of knowledge. Piaget espoused active discovery learning environments in our schools.
Intelligence grows through the twin processes of assimilation and accomodation; therefore, experiences
should be planned to allow opportunities for assimilation and accomodation. Children need to explore, to
manipulate, to experiment, to question, and to search out answers for themselves - activity is essential.
However, this does not mean that children should be allowed to do whatever they want. So what is the role of
the teacher? Teachers should be able to assess the child's present cognitive level; their strengths and
weaknesses. Instruction should be individualized as much as possible and children should have opportunities
to communicate with one another, to argue and debate issues. He saw teachers as facilitators of knowledge -
they are there to guide and stimulate the students. Allow children to make mistakes and learn from them.
Learning is much more meaningful if the child is allowed to experiment on his own rather than listening to
the teacher lecture. The teacher should present students with materials and situations and occasions that
allow them to discover new learning. In his book To Understand Is to Invent Piaget said the basic principle of
active methods can be expressed as follows: "to understand is to discover, or reconstruct by rediscovery, and
such conditions must be complied with if in the future individuals are to be formed who are capable of
production and creativity and not simply repetition" (p.20). In active learning, the teacher must have
confidence in the child's ability to learn on his own.
