Lesson 1 Intermediate Business English IV Present Simple and Continuous

Will be able to use the present simple and present continuous in order to explain the way in which different types of companies organize themselves.
Will create a diagram in order to explain the hierarchical structure in a company.
Will analyze a fictional situation and will report your conclusions.,[object Object]
Lesson 1  Company Structure Now that you have finished reading, go to the forum section and answer in a 50-60 words composition the following question: What kind  of staff organization promotes collaboration and productivity among its members? Why? Remember that in  your answer you must consider your classmates’ opinions. It is important that in your opinion you use some of the following vocabulary:  a) Crucial b) Corporate culture c) Global market d) Structured plan e) Efficiency levels f) Duties g) Bureaucratic
Lesson 1  Company Structure Grammar section As you know, the English language has two types of present: Present simple and continuous. Each one of them is going to be used in very specific situations. Look at the following sentences and try to infer their rules: Present simple. a) Corporate culture brings new developments every year. b) Corruption and bureaucracy affect 95 per cent of the economy.  c) Tangible assets are an important part in your business.  Present continuous. a) At the moment the HR department is recruiting people with MBA’s b) They are setting up a new office in Boston c) Both entities are merging into a new company that will star operations next month.
Lesson 1  Present simple and Continuous. If you noticed, the present simple has the following rules: a) It is used to express regular and general processes. The CEO of the company gives a presentation every month.  b) It is used to express facts that will not change. By far, the USA is the richest country in North America. c) It is used with some of these key words: A week, a month, always, never, sometimes, usually, rarely, ever. The present continuous has the following rules: a) It is used to talk about things that are happening at the moment. We are selling an average of 50,000 units.  b) It is used to talk about temporary situations. This week they are changing their operating system. c) It can be used to talk about future situations. Next month my boss is taking all of us for a training session.
Lesson 1  Now that we have studied the differences between present simple and present continuous, we are going to practice them in different exercises. In this first activity, we are going to listen to an interview based on the topics of schools, students, managers, and the role of continuous development after graduating.  1.- Before listening to the radio interview visit the following website: http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/About/Experiential_Learning.aspx 2.-Once you have checked the information in this web page, proceed to answer in your own words the following questions: What is the main objective of the Kellogg School of Management? What is the main focus of the Experiential Learning approach at Kellogg? 3.-Listen to the interview and answer the following questions:  a) Mention two challenges that Kellogg is facing with its students. b) Mention two changes that Kellogg has done to its courses. c) According to Chris Scott, what is the main idea behind the concept of “Marketing Rebranding”?
Lesson 1  Exercises. Role Play Activity Now, imagine that you are in charge of the Human Resources department in a big company. In the box below you have both a fictional profile of the company, and also, one diagram of the staff structure. In this activity you have first to analyze the diagram of the company.  Once you have done this write a 50-60 word composition where you make sure to give as many details of the company, your duties and responsibilities. The phrases that will help you to do this are:  My job entails/ involves   This company deals with… I’m responsible for…   This is a manufacturing company… I work for/ under…   Our target customers are… I’m in charge of…   Our main market is…
