- I am not an expert! Apps are run by elves and unicorns!Not all of these apps will work with older devices or if you haven’t updated your operating system in awhile.Info might not be accurate regarding what devices access the apps (checked late October)If I mention barcodes, think regular barcodes NOT library barcodes!
- It’s something you download onto a mobile device (or even computer) that is designed for a specific purpose (games, photography, reading, social networking, etc.)
- AFW = Apps for WorkThis location-based Gale app will find nearby libraries. You can view them on a map or in list form and point your customer to other libraries in your area. There are also school and college versions of this app.
- Scan a barcode (not a library barcode…) for immediate citations in MLA, APA and Chicago styles. Email capability, so you can email the list, cut, and paste into your works cited page.
- Use Flixster to: discover upcoming movie releases, see what’s playing in theaters nearby, view Rotten Tomato ratings, or log into Netflix. Use the DVD tab to let customers know DVDs release dates: answer referencequestions about release dates or to encourage DVD holds through “coming soon” posters and flyers.
- Use this app to jazz up an origami program with a mobile device connected to a projector. The navigation provides an origami image and the number of steps. Click on a desired origami, navigate through the screen with the back and forward arrows, and watch the animated steps.
- Ask if anyone is doing Silent Library Programming & Explain the TV showTracks (adjustable) noise levels and loudly shushes once preset noise level is exceeded. This is a great app to use for a “Silent Library” program. The app goes from light gray (not activated) to green (live) to red (too loud).
- lets users know if a nearby library owns a desired item through WorldCat integration. Simply select scan to scan the barcode, select the local listings, and scroll to the bottom. Please note that if an owning library hasn’t updated its WorldCat holdings for the item yet, RedLaser will not know that the library has it.(There are plenty of other apps that using WorldCat integration. (label.ous, iBookshelf, Pic2Shop, Book Bazaar)
- These apps are great for those of us with book title/author memory recall problems. Use it at the desk or bring it in the stacks with you.Newbery: Browse winners or honor books using the year spinner.YALSA’s Teen Book Finder: Hot picks (changes), Search (by title author, genre, year, award, booklist), and My Favorites
- Share photos, contact info for yourself or others in your address book, and your social network accounts with others by “bumping” hands with each other (both bumpers must have the Bump app open and device in hand). You can now bump with your computer by tapping your phone onto your spacebar (visit http://bu.mp).
- Powered by LinkedIn: Capture business card information through photos and add it to your contacts. It also will sync to LinkedIn profiles. Must have a LinkedIn account to use this app. (There are plenty of non-LinkedIn alternatives. In fact, Mashable recently posted about 5 recommended apps for digitizing business cards.)
- Take a picture of a document, photo, or whatever and quickly create a PDF document to save or share.CON: The free version leaves an unsightly watermark on your PDFs.
- Edit screenshots and images with arrows, text, highlights, etc. Use them in presentations, email, trainings, and more.
- CloudOn (free): View, create, and edit MS Office products. View various file types (PDF, JPG,GIF, etc.) Also offers Dropbox integration for easy access and sharing of files. Best of all, it’s free!I wish I had known about this before I paid for QuickOffice ($14.99 for iPhone & $19.99 for tablets)Dropbox (free): Share files between devices (including your computer) with Dropbox. Simply save a file into Dropbox, and you will have access to it wherever you have the app installed.
- Cox Mobile Connect - Set your DVR via your phone, check out the guide channel, and manage your home phone.Cox TV Connect (for iPad) - Watch live TV on your iPad. Might not work when out of the Cox service area.
- Find the cheapest gas price near you (list & map views). In the list view, you can report gas prices and see when the price was last reported. Report gas prices to earn rewards and prizes.
- Discover the best time to use the restroom during a movie so you don’t miss the good bits. Provides you with the best time to go, how long you have to go, a synopsis of what you missed. Use the timer feature to sync the app with the best time to go. - Pin your current location on a map when you park your car so that you can find it later. Great for city parking, parking at large venues, or for general absentmindedness. Android users, try Find My Car Free.
- Happy Hours: Provides you with a list of nearby restaurants and bars and includes their addresses, their locations on a map, what their happy hour deals are, and when happy hour ends. Filter your list of results or search for a deal by restaurant name.Taplister: Search by beers and bars to discover which bars have your favorite craft beers or to find out what nearby bars have on tap and on the menu.
- Both will direct you to discounted apps that are either on sale or free. AppDeals divides the apps by “genres” instead of categories. AppsFree offers a free app of the day, divides apps by category, and allows you to customize your streams of free apps.Mobile RSS Read your Google Reader content through this app.
