As one of Afghanistan’s largest providers of mobile telecommunications services, Afghan Wireless works hard to bring its customers the latest in reliable phone, texting, and Internet technology. One of its most popular features, SMS (short message service), can trace its first implementation to a message from a computer to a Vodaphone Orbitel 901 handset, sent in the United Kingdom in 1992. Growth of this technology was initially slow, however, and did not reach a wide customer base until the early 2000s, when SMS became a cost-effective communications alternative for mobile phone users.
