2013 SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
FOR APPLICANTS AND PARENTS
ELIGIBILITY
All high school seniors, high school graduates and GED graduates that are
planning to begin postsecondary studies in the 2013–14 school year and
high school graduates and GED graduates currently enrolled in a community
college, college, university or trade/professional school are eligible for these
grants and may apply for a WinnCompanies Scholarship provided he/she
resides at an apartment community or military base which is professionally
managed by WinnCompanies (WC) or its affiliates. The applicant/family must
be in good standing with the rules and regulations of HUD and WC.
Employees and/or their relatives of WC and its affiliates, HUD or any
applicable governmental agency that regulates the WC apartment
communities and/or military bases are not eligible for consideration for
these grants.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The criteria used to select grant recipients include academic performance,
character, and proficiency, or potential proficiency in a chosen field of study.
Each of these criteria carries equal weight in determining who will receive
grants. Academic performance is determined by evaluating high school or
college grade transcripts released to WinnCompanies by the student.
All high school seniors and matriculated college students applying must
possess a minimum of a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale or its
equivalent. College students applying for grants who have attained sufficient
credits at their institution of higher learning to be considered as a junior,
must provide documentation of a declared major. WinnCompanies values
student efforts in working toward a degree. Character will be evaluated
through examination of an essay written by the student and two references.
As part of Winn’s continuing efforts to revitalize neighborhoods with
socioeconomic challenges, WinnCompanies will give at least one annual
scholarship to a deserving applicant from certain Targeted Communities
which are identified from time to time. Such Targeted Communities include
the cities of Lowell, MA and Worcester, MA.

DETERMINATION OF FINANCIAL NEED
The application requires that the student provide their 2013 FAFSA Expected
Family Contribution (EFC) score, as well as, a listing of all scholarships,
work study grants, student loans, and any other form of financial aid they
are receiving during the 2013–14 school year. This information and the
estimated cost of tuition, room and board (if applicable), student fees and
books will be utilized to determine an individual applicant’s financial need
for the year. This financial need will be considered when determining the
amount of the award, in the sole discretion of the WinnCompanies, if an
applicant is selected to be a recipient.
DESCRIPTION OF AWARDS
Each award will represent a scholarship grant provided to the selected
students. These grants should not be mistaken in any way for student
loans. The exact number of awards and the total amount of money to be
awarded in 2013 will be determined during the selection process, in the sole
discretion of WinnCompanies.
PAYMENT OF GRANTS
All grants are made payable to the colleges or other post-secondary
institutions where the recipients will attend during the 2013–14 school
year. The student must provide WinnCompanies a copy of an admissions
acceptance letter or other suitable documentation to an accredited school.
It is the intent of WinnCompanies that the full amount of these grants will be
applied toward the recipient’s school related expenses including on campus
housing costs. We suggest that the recipient contact WinnCompanies before
accepting any scholarship from WinnCompanies, if there is any doubt about
the continuance of other financial aid, especially need-based scholarships.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
There are five essential parts of this application, and all must be received in
order for WinnCompanies to consider an application.
The deadline for completed applications is April 12, 2013. Please submit Parts I,

personal level and gain insight into your character and chosen field of
endeavor. In a typed essay of approximately 400 words identify and describe
what you feel are your most positive personal qualities. Also inform the
selection committee of your chosen field of endeavor. Additionally, in bulleted
format please list extra-curricular activities (sports, educational, social, civic,
religious, job experiences, and/or family responsibilities) which reflect your
interest in the field you have chosen to pursue through your post-secondary
studies. We encourage you to elaborate briefly on the length of time of your

IV. Utilize the attached reference forms to secure references from two (2) individuals.
These references should come from people who have first-hand knowledge
of your functioning as a student on a regular basis. WinnCompanies
WinningEdge Scholarship Program assumes that recommendations
from teachers, guidance counselors, professors, principals, deans, and/
or other school administrators are better indications of a student’s future
performance in school than personal recommendations. AS A RESULT, BOTH
RECOMMENDATIONS SHOULD COME FROM THE AFOREMENTIONED TYPE
INDIVIDUALS. References from relatives will not be accepted. If you are
unable to secure references from school personnel, employers and/or clergy
people qualified to comment on your leadership ability, your personal work
accomplishments and/or your character in general would be acceptable.
V. Certification of residency in good standing. The WinningEdge Scholarship
Program will require a form signed by the property manager certifying that
the applicant’s household is in good standing with WC apartment community
or military base. This statement will ensure that the resident/applicant’s
household is in good financial standing and not in violation of any lease
requirements where they reside. It should also be noted that the WC will
make follow-up contacts with the recipient’s property manager prior to the
actual payment of any grant money in order to endure that the applicant/
resident has maintained their good standing status. Recipient/residents falling
out of good standing will have their scholarship funds withheld until such
time as they resolve the financial obligation and/or program violation to the
satisfaction of WC.
