Rizal served a 4-year political exile on the island of Dapitan where he lived a productive life as a teacher, farmer, medical doctor, inventor, and writer. He befriended the local commandante and had some freedoms like traveling around the island. During his exile, he challenged religious authorities through debates, helped develop infrastructure projects in Dapitan, and had a child with Josephine Bracken before ending his exile to offer medical services in Cuba.

2. Introduction
Jose Rizal (June 19, 1861-December 30, 1896)
Born to a family of 9, Rizal lived a happy and memorable childhood under the guidance of
his parents, brothers, and sisters.
Studied at the Ateneo Municipal De Manila and later at the Unibersidad de Santo Tomas.
Went abroad to studied medicine and letter in Barcelona.
Meet Ferdinand Blumentritt, Rizal’s soulmate and had a premature child with him.
Wrote Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo to show Spanish Colonial Government
Served Political exile in Dapitan
Went to court and found guilty; sentenced death. Executed in Bagumbayan in Decemeber
30, 1896.

5. In Exile
Dr. Jose Rizal didn’t really
follow the guidelines that Fr.
Pablo issued.
Rizal lived in the house of a
commandante named, Kapitan
Carnicero.
There was respect between
the warden and the prisoner
for he was a man of values
and intellect instead of an
animal.
6. The Perks
The perks of Rizal of having
a good relation with the
commandante is that he was
able to go around but have
to report once a week, rode
the chestnut horse of the
commandante, and Carnicero
wrote good feedback of
Rizal’s political exile in
Dapitan.

8. The Healer
Rizal would let the locals go to his house to
get medical treatment.

9. The Teacher
During the siesta time of 2:00PM-4:00Pm,
Dr. Jose Rizal would be a teacher teacher to
the young boys Science and the basics of
Latin.
10. The Farmer
After playing the role of the educated
teacher, Dr. Jose Rizal would then involve his
young student in farming by helping him
water the plants and pruning the fruits. He
ended his session with an Angelus at
6:00PM.
11. The Writer
Dr. Jose Rizal would have dinner and after
that continue his life writings and reading
books.
12. All Bets Are Off
On September 21, 1892, the steam boat, Butuhan, made its way into
the excited shores of Dapitan.
The citizens are wondering what good news can it bring. Kapitan
Carnicero thought it was the Kapitan-Heneral therefore he quickly
commanded the band to get ready to play.
Winning lottery ticket no. 9763 which was owned by a joint Kapitan
Carnicero, Dr. Rizal, and Francisco Equilior own the Spanish
Government Controlled Manila lottery.
13. All Bets Are Off
Rizal got his share of the
P20,000 in the form of
P6,200 on which he gave
P200 to his friend, Basa, who
was based in Hong Kong.
The rest of the money he
won he invested it on
agricultural lands along
Talisay.
He was not a drinker or a
smoker but was addicted to
gambling which was his vice.
14. Rizal-Pastells Debate On
Religion
Fr. Pastells sent Dr. Rizal a
copy of the book, Sarda.
Fr. Pastells advised Dr. Rizal
to view religion from the
prism of individual judgement
and self-esteem.
Rizal wrote back to Fr.
Pastells which revealed anti
feelings for the Catholic
Church thru the ideas he
embrace while in Europe.
15. Rizal-Pastells Debate On
Religion
Fr. Pastells later gave Dr. Rizal a copy of a famous book called
Imitacion De Cristo (Imitations Of Christ).
Despite Dr. Rizal’s anti feelings for the Catholic Church, he
continued his Catholic routine by going mass, celebrating the
importance of Christmas, and Catholic related fiestas.
16. Rizal Challenges A
French To A Duel
Dr. Rizal got involved in a quarrel with a French businessman
named, Mr. Juan Lardet.
Mr. Juan Lardet bought logs from Dr. Rizal and later complained
that the logs that he received was poor quality.
Mr. Juan Lardet expressed his anger by writing a letter to a fellow
merchant and friend of Dr. Rizal, Antonio Miranda.
Mr. Juan Lardet said “If Rizal were a truthful man, he would have
informed me that the lumber not included in the account were
bad”.
17. Rizal Challenges A
French To A Duel
When Carnicero heard this
displeasing news, he informed
Mr. Juan Lardet that Dr.
Rizal was an expert in
Martial Arts specifically in
the field of Fencing and Pistol
Shooting.
Mr. Juan Lardet gave it a
thought and later apologized.
Dr. Rizal and Mr. Juan
Lardet’s relationship became
stable afterwards.
18. Rizal And Fr. Sanchez
Fr. Sanchez was the Jesuit
priest who taught Dr. Rizal
during his THE Ateneo days.
He had arrived from Europe
and was excited to see his
favorite student.
He also was the only one
that defended Dr. Rizal
controversial novel, Noli Me
Tangere.
19. Rizal And Fr. Sanchez
He tried to convinced to regain the trust of the Catholic Church by
having theological arguments.
It was the first time that he couldn't persuade his favorite student
from THE Ateneo.
Although he failed to persuade Dr. Rizal, he enjoyed his company.
He helped Dr. Rizal in making the town plaza nice.
On his birthday, Dr. Rizal gave him a manuscript entitied, Estudios
Sobre La Lengua Tagala (Studies On The Tagalog Language) which
was dedicated to his former mentor.
20. La Familia
Dr. Rizal being in political exile missed his family in Calamba,
Laguna.
Family members that visited him were Trinidad, Maria, and Narcisa.
Nephews were Teodosio, Estanislao, Maurico, and Prudencio.
21. I Spy With My Little
Eyes A Friar
On the night of November 3, 1893, a certain “Pablo Mercado” visited
Dr. Rizal.
He showed Dr. Rizal a photo of Dr. Rizal and his initials to show
that he is connected with the Rizal Family.
Pablo Mercado then later offered Dr. Rizal his services as a secret
courier to Manila.
Rizal became suspicious afterwards.

Later that day, Dr. Rizal
found out that “Pablo
Mercado” was still on the
island.
He sought the help of
Commandante Sitges to
arrest Pablo and find out the
truth.
Florencio Namanan later
confessed that he was sent
by the recollect friars to spy
on the activities and works
of Dr. Rizal
23. Rizal As Physican
Dr. Rizal treated the natives
of Dapitan despite not having
money to pay for his
excellent and professional
service.
He even gave them free
medicines.
“Here the people are so poor
that I even have to give
them medicine gratis”.
24. Dapitan’s Water System
Rizal was an expert
surveyor.
With his knowledge of
engineering, he constructed a
system of waterworks to
bring fresh and clean water
to the people of Dapitan.
25. Community Projects
“I want to do all I can for
this town”.
He made a lighting system
for the town with the use of
coconut oil lamps.
With the help of Fr. Sanchez,
they both remodeled the
town plaza.
Fr. Sanchez made a big map
of Mindanao with the use of
earth, stone, and grass.
26. Rizal As Scientist
Dr. Rizal collected specimens
of a rich virgin field.
Explored jungles and coasts.
Collected specimens of
insects, birds, snakes, lizards,
frogs, shells, and plants.
27. Rizal On Language
During his political exile, Dr.
Rizal learned bisayan,
subanum, and malay.
In total, he knew 22
languages (Tagalog, Ilokano,
Bisayan, Subanun, Spanish,
Latin, Greek, English, French,
German, Arabic, Malay,
Hebrew, Sanskrit, Dutch,
Catalan, Italian, Chinese,
Japanese, Portuguese,
Swedish, and Russian.
28. Rizal As Artist
He designed an exquisite
curtain.
He sketched a dragon, frog,
and a beetle.
He drew fishes he caught
from fishing.
29. Rizal As Businessman
In partnership with Ramon
Carreron, they both ventured
into the business of fishing,
copra, and hemp industries.
Dr. Rizal advised Saturnina to
engage in textile, jewelry,
and hemp business.
30. Rizal The Inventor
Dr. Rizal invented a unique
cigarette lighter which he
gave his soulmate, Ferdinand
Blumentritt.
The cigarette lighter was
made of wood.
He also invented a brick
making machine.
31. Mi Retiro
Dr. Rizal wrote a poem
entitled, Mi Retiro, which
describes Dr. Rizal’s life in
peaceful Dapitan.
Literary critics says its one
of Rizal’s best.
32. Glad You Came Bracken
Rizal became depressed by
the end of the day because
he didn’t have somebody to
inspire and cheer him up.
Also the death of his former
lover, Leonora Rivera died on
August 28, 1893. He needed a
comforter.
A slender, chestnut blond
with blue eyes, dressed in
simplicity, with an atmosphere
of light gayety came to his
life. She was Josephine
Bracken.
33. Francisco Rizal
Josephine came to Dapitan
because she heard about Dr.
Rizal expertise in
ophthalmology.
She needed to cure Mr.
Taufer’ blindness.
They both fell in love and
later Josephine became
pregnant.
Dr. Rizal played a trick on
Josephine that made her give
birth to an 8 month
premature baby named
Francisco after his father.
34. Rizal And The Katipunan
Andres Bonifacio, an indio, has
decided to take arms against
the Spanish Colonial
Government to finally put an
end to all the abuses that
they have done.
Andres believed that the only
way to gain independence
from Mother Spain was to
fight fire with fire and not
through reforms and
peaceful means like Rizal, an
illustrado.
35. Rizal And Katipunan
On May 2, 1896 Dr. Pio Valenzuela was named emissary to Dr. Rizal.
As a coverup, Dr. Valenzuela brought a blind man, Raymundo Mata,
to be treated by Dr. Rizal and a guide.
After having dinner, Dr. Valenzuela proceed with the true purpose
of his trip which was to have Dr. Rizal’s approval of the planned
revolution being their inspiration.
Rizal said 1. “The people are not yet ready for a revolution” and 2.
“Arms and funds must first be collected before raising the cry of
the revolution”.
36. Volunteer As Military
Field Doctor In Cuba
Cuba was suffering from a
raging yellow fever epidemic.
There was insufficient
numbers of doctors to help
the Spanish troops who were
sick.
Dr. Rizal decided to appeal to
the Kapitan-Heneral to offer
his services to the Spanish
Military in Cuba.
37. Adios Dapitan!
Finally after 4 years in exile, Dr. Jose Rizal is on his way to
another journey in his life.
He was going back to Manila to prepare his medical service to the
Spanish Military in Cuba, Havana.
He was at last enlightened and fulfilled in his exile.
