1. Lesson Title: Phrases and Clauses

4. Time allotted for the lesson: two days (two 80 minute class periods)
5. Short description of lesson
In this lesson, students will review phrases and clauses, and will be able to identify
phrases and clauses in sentences. By the close of the lesson students will be able to
differentiate between the three types of phrases (prepositional, appositive, verb) and
the two types of clause (independent and dependent). The lesson is designed so that
students can move at their own pace, as this is a review of grammar concepts
previously covered in the course. Students will also complete and submit two
assignments: one dealing with phrases and one with clauses. Students will also
complete the Clause Quiz which offers additional practice in distinguishing between
independent and dependent clauses. Students will complete the third step in the Four
Level Analysis example at the end of the lesson.

8. Instructional Procedures
a. Students will begin the Lesson by viewing the informational graphics
b. Students will review the notes for phrases and clauses
c. Students will complete and submit the assignment for phrases and the
assignment for clauses
d. Students will take the Clause Quiz for additional practice
e. Students will complete the third step of the Four Level analysis before moving on
to the next lesson
9. Adaptations for special learners:
Learners with special needs will be privy to audio notes, clarification on assignments,
additional time if needed, and/or online tutorials.
10. Supplemental Activities:
Online tutorials if needed, or instructional videos on TeacherTube.
11. Assessment/Evaluation:
Students will be assessed informally in Lesson 3. Assessment data will come from the
assignment submissions. Students need to score a 70% average on the two assignments
in order to move on to the Lesson 4: Types of Sentences. Feedback will be provided to
students via correspondence from teacher to student and grade reports on our class
Moodle page.
12. Learner Products:
Students will submit two worksheet based assignments that allows them additional
practice on the concepts of phrases and clauses. Students will also complete the third
step of the Four Level Analysis.
